Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School has significant safety concerns that forced me to remove my child from enrollment. While the teachers are dedicated and hardworking, the administration has failed to provide a secure and well-monitored environment for students. The school lacks sufficient staff to properly supervise students, leading to repeated incidents of bullying and other safety issues. Disturbingly, I was never informed of these incidents by the school but had to learn about them directly from my child. Additionally, the school’s security measures are inadequate—its camera system is nonfunctional, which is highly alarming. Furthermore, given these ongoing concerns, I cannot recommend this school to any parent who prioritizes their child’s safety and well-being.

It has been a pleasure to interact with the teachers, other students and family at BECS. The faculty and staff are committed to the holistic growth of the student body. The energy is positive and vibrant.

I admire the principal of eBrooklyn Excelsior Charter School. He has a long track record of success with whatever he touches. The school’s recent NY State assessment scores have shown tremendous growth since he arrived. Yes he has high expectations and that is not for everyone. But if you’re looking for your child to be in an educational setting where learning comes first, this is it.

The school has a very solid Math program and this is very important to us and our child. The state test scores show the great job the middle school math teachers do at Brooklyn Excelsior

I would volunteer to come back to help in a heart beat. I love what BECS is doing for it's students and it's community.

I did a short volunteering stint, and it was incredible. Really enjoyed all the students and faculty I met. Should I need a place to send my own children, I'd proudly pick brooklyn excelsior

As an educational consultant, my teammates and I at Lafayette Consulting have had the opportunity to tour and visit many schools. I personally have visited Brooklyn Excelsior 4 times during the school year and with each visit this school remains one of the most effective schools I’ve seen.Myself or a member of my team visited the school 3 times last school year. The model classrooms that were presented to us during our visits are phenomenal examples of how the classroom experience should be everywhere. The principal has a vision for school improvement and the leadership team has embraced his vision. The students are very well behaved due to the principal’s insistence on respect of and for the school/classroom learning environments. Anytime my team and I have had a chance to visit the school, we have been greeted with hellos and smiling faces of the students. There is a core group of teachers at Brooklyn Excelsior that are committed to focusing on delivering a solid educational product without losing sight of the outcomes parents want for their children’s education. The most refreshing part of our experiences with the teachers is that they are always looking at ways to better themselves and improving their processes. I would recommend anyone who has had a complaint about this school should set up time to visit the principal and his staff to tour the school. The takeaway that they should have after their visit will be one of a high functioning school by the numbers and by the commitment of excellence exuded by the leadership team and staff. We at Lafayette Consulting can’t wait to see the great things the future holds for Brooklyn Excelsior and its supporters.

As a parent, I applaud the Board of Trustees for retaining a true leader to be the principal of Brooklyn Excelsior. The school is very different, in a positive way, from just 2 years ago. I believe this is because of the new leadership team. The school is clean, you don't hear about fights at the school and the teachers are very responsive to parents. Tour the school and judge for yourself. I'm sure you will come to the same conclusion I did, this is school the way it should be.

Not happy at all. My son had been complaining that the children are bothering him while he is in school. Staff has been made aware of the problem but the minute that my son began to get upset and defend himself the only thing that the staff sees is his behavior. They are quick to suspend a child when they act out. How is it that they speak of having the child's best interest at heart and if a disciplinary action is require that should take place in the building not by keeping the child out of school because that only keeps them away from getting and education. It's bad enough that the children go home and tell parents that they didn't get homework for the day because the printer is down. I'm considering taking my son out of the school. It's just sad.

As an educator, I cannot understand why someone would opt out of the public school system in favor of this terrible excuse for a school. Having only been a teacher there for a short period of time, I can say that leaving was a good choice. Everyday after school was spent in tears because it was such an awful experience. I would not recommend this institution to teacher an/or students.

I really regret putting my son in this school. Because of them he is struggling, damaged from the dean and his teacher and he doesn't get enough help because it's low staffing

THE EXPERIENCE AT THIS SCHOOL WAS HORRIBLE. MY CHILD IS NOT A LOW INCOME STUDENT. NOR WOULD I ALLOW HIM TO FAIL. AS A PART I REALIZE I ALSO PLAY A KEY ROLL IN MY CHILD'S LEARNING. MY CHILD WAS SKIPPED AND I STILL REMOVED HIM FROM THE SCHOOL. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS SCHOOL IS SHUT DOWN.

The principal Dr. Petty has a huge chip on his shoulder! He doesn't care about the families in our neighborhood! He's very rude ! All he's good for is suspending these children and mistreating his teachers! Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School would be a better school once he's gone...it was better before he came! I'm so happy I took my children out of this school!

Administration staff are the worst and will talk to you however they feel. My child feels bullied by teachers and administration. This school is not a great school of leadership, more like prepping your child for failure or prison. Do not send your child to this school.

Principals and teachers expects respect and discipline from kids when they don't know what it means. Unnecessarily harassing but not all the kids. They only doing it to minority's. Some time I feel like making complaints to DOH. This school should be closed down.

- graduated student I feel that the authorities have zero respect for their staff and students including the parents. They do not have good teachers I as a student went into high school not knowing certain topics. They do not have things that are required for students to have. Such as a gym, we had to go outside in the cold for gym just so they can use the "multi purpose room" as a cafeteria. I often got sick and almost caught pneumonia. I HIGHLY recommend you to keep your child from attending this school.

i am the parent of a fifth grader who has been at becs since kindergarten. he has had the privelege of having such good, caring, smart and encouraging teachers. i will keep hope alive for 6th -8th grade. i also have a 2nd child that graduated from becs- he attended from 4th-8th grade. it was indeed a bumpy ride and i have found myself willing to pull them out but as i say- the teachers my kids were blessed with have been awesome. i also emailed the teachers and for the most part , received replys from them. yes, we have a rather new principal and while i think he has made some positive changes, it is not always consistent. we used to receive update phone calls on sunday evenings which i thought was great but i have not received any calls on a consistent level lately. the front desk is helpful and i suppose respect given, respect received. yes, the gym is their mutli purpose everything room and its drives me nuts but this is what it is. yes, they eat in their classroom and dont have a typical public school cafeteria. i can imagine this is frustrating. and yes i can imagine the classes are full and teachers come and go often. we have been lucky and i am a parent who investigates and looks into my sons work= looks into his bookbag= and follows up with his teachers.
