We had a horrible time at Willard. While some of the teachers were excellent (we had some great math teachers, for example) and we loved the cooking and gardening programs, bullying was a huge problem that, despite many, many complaints to the school, went un-addressed. My child was bullied mercilessly by another child the entire time and that other child would basically play innocent - it was never dealt with beyond that. My child is in high school now and we have spent thousands of dollars in therapy to help them get their confidence and sense of self back. I'm not sure whether that will ever happen. Additionally, although some teachers were fantastic, there were many others who were not, and those set a negative tone for the entire experience for us.

After Malcolm X Elementary, so far, Willard has been less about Ultra Liberal Activist and political indoctrination and supporting the black community while giving short shrift to other segments of the school and badmouthing white men, and more about academics. That being said, the activist/indoctrination goals still resonate at Willard. When my Asian son's 6th grade English teacher can get away with teaching his class rap and introducing Tupac Shakur, a hard core gangster rapper, as simply a poet rapper, using one of his few less objectionable poems, then you know common sense academics have gone out the window in favor of indoctrination. This is Berkeley Unified School District through and through. Beware.

My son stayed for two months during the fall of 2015 at Willard Middle School during my short stay at UC Berkeley as a vising scholar. The school felt very safe and he quickly got great friends at the school. The teachers and management at the school were very, very dedicacted. He had the bedst two months of his life at the school.I can only give Willard my best possible recommendations.

This school has been a fantastic experience for our sixth grade son. His classes are interesting and challenging and the teachers and staff are talented, caring people who seem to love their jobs. I could not be more pleased.

willard middle school is a very peaceful enviorment it helped my sister get her grades up with the touters that were provided after school. it has a wonderful garden and wonderful teachers
