This school completely coasts by on its reputation from years gone by. At one time, it was a great school, but it hasn't been in some time. The principal is really just an overworked figure head who, due to his exhaustion, defers to his assistant principal of instruction. This woman is rude, mean, and belittling. She has no idea how to effectively communicate with people. She bullies the staff, the students, and parents that allow it. The school is no longer a true magnet school. Inner city magnets require an entrance exam score of 90-95% compared to Herndon's 51%. This has been done to increase numbers but numbers of what, a group of underperforming students who are so far below grade level that teachers have to spend the majority of their time remediating below grade level students instead of challenging truly advanced students? It's a magnet in name only. Most of the parents are fine with it because it allows them to brag to their neighbors and in-laws about how their child attends a "magnet school" despite the fact that it really isn't. If you want your child to be a part of true magnet program, bypass this place.

I myself went to Herndon and now my daughter goes there. This school is a family and sets a great foundation for their highschool/college years. Mr. Thomas is an amazing principal as well, he knows every single kids name and makes them feel special!

Teachers bully students, students bully students. Everyone bullies everyone. If you are not popular, White, Christian or have money, you are no one and you are a target for bullying. As an LGBT student, your bullying is doubled. I was class of 2016, and I’ve heard since then it’s gotten worse. I’m just glad I am out of that awful school. I’ve experienced teachers bullying me, along with students and counselor staff. Trust me, if you can go anywhere else, please do... this school crushed my confidence and self love. I still have body image issues because of the bullying. In all honesty, any positive review you see is from a popular kid/parent who gets what they want and control the school. And trust me, the parents DO control everything.

I would rate our experience at this school 3/5. We transferred here from the top elementary magnet school in the parish for middle school. The level of work and expectations were lower than we had experienced in elementary school. The school as a whole is outdated from the infrastructure to the teaching tools. completely opposite of what we had experienced throughout our previous school years. There was also a constant underlying bias against certain students .

Daughter has attended the school since first grade. With exception to the distance from our home to the school, we have had nothing but positive experiences. Do hope the library gets an upgrade--after all, reading is the foundation for success in learning and the atmosphere needs to reflect as much--though I believe the librarian is invaluable.
