I would rate this school 9/10 because it has amazing staff and teaching but has some student problems.

My son started at this school this year in 6th grade! We are very impressed in the academics and the administration! The teachers are great at communication and setting high standards to follow! He has had a great year academically and socially! It is so important to have a great school like this as they grow and change at this age! Thank you BMS!

The gem of our district! Bms has the very best staff, with exceptionally low turnover. The positive work environment extends throughout the school, and is evident amongst the students as well. You can tell there is mutual respect between all all areas of the school ---admin, teachers, support staff and students. The kids are encouraged to have an "I can learn anything" attitude. Like every school, there is too much testing, but at least it doesn't feel like the test scores are the main focus. The attitude is more like if we teach well then the scores will follow. There are lots of field trips, and travel opportunities, a thriving music program, and plenty of extra curricular activities. Bms is a really great school!

Basalt Middle School welcomes all students with open enrollment. Our administrators handle all situations with such an open mind and encouragement, I am proud to be part of this school's staff with such a positive attitude. This community is a small, close-knit and diverse population, however everyone...parents and students alike just seem to meld. Our principals and teachers encourage a "H.O.T." learning experience which encompasses the characteristics of H-HONOR, O-OWNERSHIP, T-TOLERANCE, with a daily reminder of the school's motto; "enter to learn, exit to lead". Our parent portal and weekly messages provide up-to-date information to parents about their child's progress. Basalt Middle School continually submits applications for available grants and any monies realized from these grants is greatly appreciated and expended to further promote this school's teaching and learning programs on behalf of our students.

The teachers and principal of the school are very supportive of the students. They strive to have an impact on every child. Academic responsibility is a quality that is stressed, measured and conveyed on a weekly basis. After school activities are plentiful with everything from after-school academic help and enrichment to sports and the arts.

Our school is an amazing place to be. It is filled with eager diverse students, who display their art work around the campus - including a rock garden in the front of the building, they have the best music program in the entire Roaring Fork Valley and the 8th grade Football and Wrestling programs finished first in there division this year, despite the lack of funding for both programs. The students speak of ownership and accountability and the teachers encourage enriched learning. The school could very much use a facelift and some new and improved instruments, athletic equipment, computers and technology. Paint, carpet, window treatments, new furniture would be sweet as well.

My child has been very happy at Basalt Middle School. The band program is amazing. The staff are educated and dedicated to helping our kids grow. We do wish they had more science/technology opportunities, though.
