Avon is so lucky to have a 5-6 school. TBS does a great job preparing students for middle school. It is a great bridge between elementary and middle. 5th grade is similar to elementary while the 6th grade offers closer to a middle school vibe. The teachers and admins really care about their students. The students follow a rigorous curriculum, but there is still recess and fun during the day. The school also offers some afterschool classes and activities, including a phenomenal musical theater show. The music program is also strong with kids able to explore band, strings and chorus.

I've been quite shocked at the level of homophobia and general bullying in the school - it's not a very welcoming or safe environment for children. And everything is very process-driven and robotic - the school lacks close parental involvement and parental interaction with teachers and safe, which makes the school culture quite "cold" and unforgiving. All of this can be traced by to poor school culture.

We have been underwhelmed by Thompson Brook and, at least so far, Avon schools in general. When moving to the Hartford area, we read that Avon had among the best schools - and while this may be true in this area, those coming from out-of-state may be disappointed. The buildings are old and not kept up well, transportation to and from the school is a mess which leads a very large number of parents to drive their kids (which can create morning traffic chaos), and the schools lack amenities people from other areas may expect - no pools, limited sports facilities, dated performance space, etc. Class sizes are about average. Teachers are fine though the school lacks diversity among its teaching staff (age, gender, race). The student body is diverse but I would not consider it very welcoming - it's amazing the slurs (especially anti-LGBT slurs) you hear from the kids when watching a school activity or sport.

Not great. They also didn’t put my son in the because he told them someone was picking up. The school received no parental approval

Poor. Worst school in the Avon system. Lots of bullying and ineffective leadership not stopping or preventing it.

Excellent school full of quality students, good activities and they are staffed with caring and motivated teachers.
