AHS is an amazing school! Overall, the students are more than prepared for college or other post-secondary school plans. The courses are challenging. There are many different electives to choose from, including engineering, art, music, history and science electives. Students can take a ton of APs and college credit classes or can choose to take regular classes. The student body is engaged, spirited and welcoming. There are many activities to get involved with— all kinds of clubs, theater, music, and sports to choose from. The teachers and admins really care about the students and the school. Students get a high level education while also growing as people.

The best thing that can be said about Avon High School is that it's better than Avon Middle School. This, of course, is the lowest of bars, as AMS is a disaster, wrapped in a fiasco, inside a dumpster fire.AHS teachers range from OK to moderately above average, but barely seem interested in the students. The administration is new and underwhelming. There are lots of weird emails filled with fluff, but nothing substantive. It almost feels like the administration emails were written by a high school student at times. It may seem strange that Avon has a reputation for having good schools while having such mediocre to bad schools, but the reality is that "good schools" generally means "affluent families." Most kids from affluent families do OK regardless of school, and the corollary is that mediocre to bad schools can appear to be "good schools" if they are filled with kids from affluent families. This is Avon schools in a nutshell: a school system coasting by because most of the kids are from affluent families, and God help you if you need schools to do any more than coast.

We have had a great experience in the elementary schools. Not so great in secondary schools. We are sending our kids to a private high school.

My daughter is in her second year here. Every year, things get worse and worse. Most of the teaching faculty is good. However several of the non teaching staff have now been replaced with lower paid workers. The administration keeps a very tight leash on everyone. This school has a lot of minor issues that add up. I don't even know where to begin. For one, the library is now a complete mess. The resources there have been 'donated' to other district schools, meaning a lack of decent technology while working. What little they do have is either in shambles or unavailable to students unless they are part of a class. There is absolutely no student life anymore. Communication is non existent. There was a recent leak of all student GPAs, the midterm and final schedules seems to be planned out so that the students will fail, the bus transport system is horrible. They regulate students like prisoners and then practically encourage bad behavior. They no longer have advisory, something thats been going on for years and the daily schedule is planned as such that if you miss even a day of school, you have fallen extremely behind.

I am a former student of the entire Avon public school system (k-12) so I have a pretty good insight about AHS. The school has definitely been on the decline in the past few years in terms of quality of education. The reason AHS graduates go onto some of the top schools in the nation is because it's the student's handwork and intelligence that gets them there. Not the guidance of the teaching staff. The language programs at AHS are lacking compared to other public schools in the Farmington Valley region. The music department is actually pretty strong with a number of outlets for students to pursue their passions in. AHS's sports teams are intense and time consuming. As a former triple athlete, there were a number of instances where sports had to come before school. AHS sports (especially soccer, field hockey, basketball, and lax) do not take themselves lightly. The AP department is extremely lacking. I felt cheated once entering college that so many students from other schools had been offered twice the variety of AP classes to chose from. AHS is a good school because the students are smart, not because of the stellar education once receives from here.
