LOE has excellent teachers, however their administrative team (the principal and assistant principal) are terrible. They expect the teachers to handle all discipline issues and will not support them when it needs to be escalated. Due to this, the teachers have to spend so much time handling the children who are misbehaving at the children who want to learn expense. They protect the children who are rude and non-compliant. The principal actually stated to me, "I don't believe in punishment...look at the recidivism rate of prisoners". They do not have spelling (this is intentional as they don't want to limit the words children use during free writing) and they do not grade their free writing for grammar or punctuation. Phonics and diagraming of sentences is not taught. Classic literature is not introduced, however, your 5th grader will read an article regarding a transgender girl that you won't be made aware of unless your child tells you after the fact. If you want to meet in person, sorry, that will not happen either. It is diverse (which is wonderful), but is losing amazing families and teachers in droves.

There is honestly nothing wrong with this school in my opinion. I went here a few years ago, and I enjoyed it a lot. Live Oak is a very diverse school, and it makes it a priority to help all of its students learn in the best way possible. All the teachers were very nice and made school a great experience for me. There is no good reason why you shouldn’t send your child here.

Highly positive. An open welcoming environment which encourages parent involvement, most teachers and staff are experienced, very caring and openly communicative, great leadership from principal & asst principal. I have 3 boys in various grades enrolled.

I had my sons at LOE, my oldest son is in middle school and he is excelling academically. My youngest son is in 4th grade and he is also excelling academically. The teachers are caring and committed educators. I couldn't be happier with LOE! Thank you!

Continued from a moment ago... I take issue with a commenter from below saying it's a good place if your child is "average" and you want your child to be around other "average" kids as well. My son and daughter are extremely intelligent, and have flourished at Live Oak. The teachers are very engaging and challenge the kids enough. My children are not brats, so they don't need a teacher to have to be extra engaging in order for them to learn. The wife and I engage them afterschool and do plenty with them on the weekend, so they are not challenged for attention and activity. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in a well rounded and positive learning environment to give Live Oak a look.

I have two girls enrolled currently grades 1&4. Love the school. All of the staff interactions have been positive. The principal Katie Holding is great with the kids. She really works hard to create a positive environment for the students and staff. We have moved around quite a bit as renters in the Austin area. We'll be renewing our lease this summer so the girls can stay in this school. Next year I'll have three going. We're excited.

Live Oak has its pros and cons. On the positive side, it is a very warm and inviting environment, and it is clear the staff is caring and invested in teaching students. The school population and surrounding community is very diverse and there's a fair amount of parent engagement. There are some negatives, however. The school has a very small talented and gifted population, and only ONE TAG teacher who splits her time across all grade levels. The overall test scores of the student body are middling at best. If you have an average student, this may be a great environment for him or her. For kids needing more challenge and a cohort that more closely resembles them in terms of student achievement and challenging learning, this is not the right school.

My family lucked out getting into Live Oak. There is a comfortable feel for us. The office staff is easy to communicate with, and freindly. Lot of smiles all around. This school isn't a training ground for standardized tests, so my son learned more than how to color in bubbles. Most of the children I've spoken to have been kind and respectful, and that's quite a few since I volunteer often. Parents are very involved. My son says: Most of the teachers have very good personalities, he loves the 'spirit sticks' and he feels safe. This year the beloved Mrs. Morris retired, with is very sad. I spoke with the new prinipal at length recently and she seemed truly concered about the situation we spoke about. She implemented a new conduct card program for teachers to communicate a childs behavior throughout the day, and I like what I'm seeing so far. The school holds monthly assemblies in the cafeteria, one for younger grades and one for older, with awards and announcements. There's a 'running club' every friday, where the kids run together with parents and teachers and get prizes for doing so many laps. The cafeteris offers 4 options every day for lunch. Awesome school!

Our family has had a wonderful experience at this school. They encourage family involvement, teachers are great, and the PTA team is awesome! I love the school, our neighborhood, and am very happy we have chosen this area to live.
