This school isn’t a friendly place where you feel safe or part of the school community. Most teachers just hang out talking or don’t do their jobs but the substitute teachers can address solutions or problems when something is wrong and can discipline the kids. Not one staff member asked if you have ever been to the school or how appreciative you are of subbing/being there today. I highly recommend NOT attending this school for anyone who ever is looking for an elementary school. This school needs work and help based on behaviors and making it a better environment for students, staff, and visitors like family members or substitutes, for instance.

I was worried about sending my daughter here but so far she has had a good experience and I'm very impressed with how well she is doing. She has an excellent teacher and every staff member I have meet has been very kind and wonderful with the kids. The teachers really care about their students. However, there seems to be a lot of kids with serious behavioral issues and not much support from parents. The lack of parental involvement and the behavior problems from some of the kids can make it a little stressful for the other kids and on occasion I have been concerned about safety issues. But overall I'm more impressed with this school then I thought I would be.

There are some committed teachers and staff at Johnston however the environment is not always respectful.

This is probably the most culturally diverse elementary school in Buncombe County and it is a beautiful thing to witness. As a PTO member and substitute teacher, I have seen how much the teachers, administration, and guidance counselor care about the success of the students. I am impressed by how creative the teachers are and make learning the fundamental subjects fun. The school also offers music and art and has a great computer lab. There is a 3rd and 4th grade after school chorus that performs concerts around the county. My child's last four years at Johnston Elementary have been a wonderful experience.
