I am currently a student at Slauson Middle School in grade 7, It is a very beautiful place. Most of the teachers are very kind and good people, especially, Mrs. Greene, Mr. Sternfels, Mrs. Margolis, Mrs. Darnton, Mr. Treze, and of course the best of them all Mr. Hooker who isn't a teacher. Although some of the teachers are stricter than others and others more laid back, none our bad people and I am happy to go to this school. The food here is great compared to my elementary school, lots of options. Additionally, it is a safe school, fights are not very common and when they happen they are broken up in a very short time if public, threats to schools are none from what I know, and the punishment system is stricter than average but not unreasonable. Finally, there are counselors you can go to who are very open and nice, Mrs. Kissel, Mrs. Chung, and I forgot the 3rd one. Nothing bad about the school's structure. Overall I would rate this school a 4.6/5. P.S. Homework is not too much but enough for success.

We are having a great experience with the teachers at Slauson. They have been really kind, encouraging and enthusiastic. They have made this a wonderful experience for my student. Despite being virtual my student is still staying connected and learning! The teachers really care about their students and it shows!

ParentOverall experiencePositive. Excellent teachers include all those in Social Studies, PTLW, French, choir, Gym, the Librarian, some teachers in ELA, some in Science. We've also been thrilled with the A2 Virtual Math. A special shout out to Mr. Williams, Mrs. Greene, Sobo, Ms. Lee, Mr. Strite, Ms. Jaster, Mr. Steck, Madame Payer from French. All of these teachers have inspired, taught, and positively connected with both of our children and other children we know.

All positive so far, almost through 6th grade. Daughter loves it.

1.This school has a big problem with disciplining kids- instead of nicely saying what is right and what is wrong, kids are bullied by janitors and lunch "supervisors". Kids are made to clean their "mess" after lunch- it is janitors job but the school wants kids to act "like at the home table or at the restaurant".2.The racial problem is related to the neighborhoods this school serves. Recent bloody fight supports the statement. 3.Very dirty- dust balls are everywhere, windows were never washed, dusting also never happening in the school (even though they constantly collect money from kids for the improvements of the classrooms). 4. Water in water fountains is the color of rust and smells like sewer.5. During lunch kids don't have enough food. The spaces are limited, some kids have to seat on the floor.6. School supports "happy 80" philosophy- top ten and bottom ten of the class are in no luck but the rest 80 happily performing. New Principal Assistant Ms. Anglin is in a wrong place- can't deal with students that need more attention than others - that is why school is so disorganized. She lets kids from wealthy families do whatever they want to and picks on students from average income families. The Principal is good but his assistant is useless.

Teachers are sincerely interested in the success of their students. I have received calls and emails regarding my child on issues over and above what a typical teacher would extend to a parent. We love it!

The undercurrent of cliquishness and bullying that runs through Slauson creates a general atmosphere that one would expect to find in a medium security prison. Respect, tolerance and kindness have no importance in this school, and will probably remain irrelevant until they are included on the MEAP or turned into competitive sports. There is one prepackaged (and state mandated) anti bullying assembly in the fall which the principal feels is sufficient for the year, and which has zero impact on the kids. There is no dialogue or engagement with the kids, ever, about how people should treat each other. There is also no meaningful adult supervision at lunch and outside of school in the morning. Academically, the main emphasis is on student organization rather than learning. If your child has 7 teachers, they will use Powerschool 7 different ways - because they can. There are a few really amazing teachers here, and the music program is good, but other than that, this school is about adaptation, worksheet learning, and survival of the toughest.

Like so many Ann Arbor schools, this is a place where many teachers earn tenure and can sit back waiting to retire. If even 10% of the teachers are awful, that's 10% too many in my view, but nothing can be done. It's true that this school is extremely cliquey, a result of the very cliquey neighborhood of families surrounding it. That seems to set the tone of the school and enough kids are able to muddle through with the bad teachers that no admin has the guts to confront poor job performance. Social environment that is hostile and bullying to some of the kids is a-okay. This school caters completely to the 60-70% who can thrive with little support or genuine challenge, the rest are just written off as misfits. We're still debating the inconvenience of transferring out. It's hard to abandon the local school but every day feels like a compromise, honestly.

Although in a lot of ways, Slauson has good academics, I think that a few of the teachers and a lot of the students leave something to be desired. The teachers in question not only don't cover the material in a manner in which it is easy to understand, but often introduce situations that put students in an uncomfortable amount of stress, usually unnecessarily. And even though I've never been the target of bullying, you never have to look far to see or hear someone being singled out negatively. At times, even violence has occurred. While I've made some of the best friends of my life there and had great experiences, Slauson still has a ways to go. - A 7th Grade Student

I hate this school. The teachers dont care about anything but their paychecks and don't challenge the kids whatsoever. the kids are jerks, and swearing and vulgarity are tolarated. It's full of jerks and is covered with spraypaint. If you want to be bullied this is your school. I moved here 4 months ago and kids already don't accept me. I would LOVE to transfer out of this school.
