Our family has so much praise for this school. We have watched our child grow academically, spiritually and socially.

Academics can be good with some great teachers, but the needs of struggling students are not met. While stated beliefs are sound, there is a deep affinity among leaders and families to a socially conservative worldview extra to the Gospel (e.g., fear of government control, minimizing racial issues, science skepticism) that can be perceived as preeminent. The culture is most problematic: confident without humility, a veneer of niceness over genuine love, politely intolerant of different opinions, focused on appearance and performance over grace, all despite a stated nurturing intent. Mental health is handled poorly.Wilberforce destroyed the confidence of my two very different children who attended at different ages. Having them in this environment with a distorted Christian faith in substance and style drives this rating. The limited number of negative reviews does not reflect the experience of many others we know who are often gaslighted when raising concerns.

Wilberforce has been a wonderful community for our three children. We’re so glad to have found such a robustly Christian school with strong academics. The teachers are dedicated, talented, and great mentors. The school culture builds the kids up. The Lower School has proved a magical experience for our kids and Middle School is somehow transcending the normal challenges of that stage of childhood. If it errs, it errs on the side of being too academically rigorous but the teachers do a good job of helping students learn at different levels and paces.

I am a 9th grader at Wilberforce I have been here for 4 years. My entire experience here has been incredible. When I started I was a year behind in math, within a few short months my teachers caught me up. Math is now one of my favorite subjects. The math and sciences are strong subjects at Wilberforce. So far in biology we don't only memorize facts, we look at the organisms we are studying up-close. We experience modern science through current articles and we discuss the most recent discoveries and how they affect the world around us. Every teacher encourages us to ask questions and yearn to discover. In Humane Letters we are not lectured on the literature we are reading or the history that we are learning, we discuss it and we dive into it. We discover new ideas and discuss them at length. The only reason that we are able to do this is because of our small class sizes. Currently the 9th grade class is about 16 people, this size allows everyone to be heard and to share their ideas. For math we separate by gender, this helps create a safe environment for learning, we are free to ask questions and learn in the way that our minds work. Another benefit to having small class sizes is we create life long relationships, the six girls in class nine are very close, we know each other very well and we lift each other up. Often times at lunch you will find us helping each other with homework, discussing ideas further, or just having fun.

Wilberforce has been an incredible experience. Now a Junior, I came to the school in 6th grade, 6 years ago. Humanities is definitely a strong topic at the school, as literature throughout middle school and Humane Letters in Upper School have been both enjoyable and challenging. With classes focused more on discussion instead of lecturing, it makes the humanities both fun and interesting. Math is focused on truly understanding advanced topics, and Science classes are approached with hands-on labs and field trips. Overall, the academics at TWS are challenging and advanced, yet still enjoyable and bearable. Other than academics the growing athletics and extracurricular teams makes TWS stand out among area schools. A wide variety of growing teams with great coaches gave me options of playing all sorts of different sports I never imagined I'd try.Lastly, the school takes a unique approach to the college process. The counselor Mrs. Antlitz is awesome, and the school definitely starts us early in high school to start considering schools.

This is our 2nd year at Wilberforce. We have 2 children in the school . We are so thankful for loving learning environment Wilberforce has created. They truly have mastered the Art of joyful education. They also put a great amount of focus on character development which supports what we are teaching in our home. Wilberforce truly partners with the parent.

My experience was absolutely miserable. I attended wilberforce from 5th grade all the way to 8th grade. In my time at the school I learned very little to nothing unless it was related to the bible. I was never challenged mentally and I still was able to maintain a straight A average. I spent 5-10 minutes doing homework everyday and never stressed about my education. 1 year ahead is absolutely incorrect. They are 1 year behind if anything. I walked out of this school and went through pain my freshman year of high school. I was completely and utterly left to swim with sharks having never touched the water. I struggled and I blame all of my difficulties on the lack of education that I received here. My one piece of recommendation is that if you have the opportunity to go somewhere else, take it.

This is our first year at Wilberforce and they have gone above and beyond to help us navigate in this new schooling environment. The teachers are A+ and the families have been very welcoming.

Our experience has been nothing short of amazing. Before enrolling we had a straight ‘A’ student that was bored and another that very much disliked school and who only wanted to play sports. Within the first month, huge transformations were well under way and today both are now challenged and passionate about learning. As you read our answers to the remaining questions you’ll begin to understand why.

We joined the Wilberforce School last year with high expectations, and found them exceeded in just about every way. The academic program is superb, and we were constantly amazed by the rich and substantive work that our child was engaged in for literature studies, the careful attention and focus he was encouraged to bring to mathematics, and the interactive learning about history and the arts that continued throughout the year. The school's emphasis on character development is real, but is coupled with high academic standards and a rich and substantive curriculum. The administrative leadership is professional, responsive, and engaged with the children and families at the school. Kind teachers and open lines of communication with parents bring it all together. The afterschool situation is a bit challenging if you're a family where both parents work, but I'm hopeful that as the school continues to grow in enrollment this aspect of the programming will keep pace. The classes are small (which admittedly might be a better fit for some children than others), and the overall mood of the school is one of kindness and nurture. My sense is that most of the families at Wilberforce are from relatively conservative Protestant denominations, but we found a diversity of Christian faiths represented (Catholic, evangelical, mainline Protestant), and never felt out of place as members of a more progressive denomination. The student body is also more ethnically diverse than we had expected. Overall, we've been very pleased with the past year. If you're even remotely interested in the school, I'd encourage you to visit. Actually seeing the school in action, and meeting some of the teachers and administrators, was what convinced us that this school was the right fit for our son. We've not been disappointed!

Such a delightful gem of a school! Teachers and administrators are genuinely good people that love children and are very invested in the art of teaching and the building of strong character in their students. Small class size and a close relationship with the parents make for a very wonderfully supportive environment for all. The academics are very strong, on average one year ahead. The children love learning latin, studying the bible, going on field trips, and they read great literature! My child LOVES the strategic games club and painiting miniatures, as well as playing tennis and participating in the Math and Science Club. My child transfered from a much bigger, very well known private school in the area and had to do some catching up to work at the level of the students here, but their teacher was very supportive, and in fact now my child is a Johns Hopkins scholar. I cannot thank Wilberforce enough!

This school has very small classes, which is a plus. (the largest class has 16 students) If you are very christian this is great, but there is not much dependency with that, everything is centered around God, so if you aren't completely christian it is not a good match. The environment is great, but very strict. The academic programs are challenging, but if you are very academically gifted they don't offer many enrichment programs. The teachers are young and talented. They teach Latin well, which is a great language to learn. The literature is good quality, but not very current. Extracurricular programs are good, including debate, strategic games and others. The only sports though are basketball, cross country and track.
