I had experienced this school for two years before we moved out of the area, and I would not recommend this school. My first experience with the principal was icy. I had no idea who she was at that conversation, and she came in so hard. It felt like she was attacking me as to why I picked up my child a little early a couple of days that week when I had written the reason on the sign-out sheet. She was rude and left me stunned; when she walked back into the office, I asked the security guard who that was, and when he said the principal, I was taken aback. My kids enjoyed their teachers. However, we got stuck with a teacher for our kindergartener who has a behavior disorder that the teacher wanted to ignore. I'm not sure how common it is for teachers to make late-night phone calls to parents or phone calls on the weekends, concerned about their child not smiling in photos, not listening, having to fill out think sheets, or getting text messages stating that the teacher isn't feeling well, and can I talk to my child to ensure they listen that day? Then, when called into a 504 meeting, the teacher disregards any prior events and states that the child doesn't have any needs of concern. I did not care for this school, and when I went into that meeting, it felt like the school/teacher was against my child instead of all of us working together to make the best plan of action for the child and the teacher. It did not seem like a school that was friendly toward children with disabilities. At the school we are at now, during the 504 meeting the school brought in their school psychologist. I went win getting ready to fight for my child, and when I left that meeting, it relieved so much anxiety to walk out of a meeting where every single person in the room was there to make it the best educational experience for the child, and everyone was on the same team. It was a completely different experience than the one at Red Mill. If we ever move back to the area, it will not be in a neighborhood zoned for this school.

Best elementary school in the area, no question!

Could not ask for a better school. I have 2 kids that have attended Red Mill from 1st grade through 5th grade. Absolutely love it.

Visit Red Mill for yourself, talk to the teachers and staff, see the facilities, and learn about all the extra curricular activities and opportunities for students. I have two children that attend Red Mill and we have had wonderful experiences and opportunities. They have an active PTA and daily opportunities for parents to volunteer and be involved in their children's education. We have lived in other states and Virginia Beach by far has had the best schools. We love the neighborhood and Red Mill Elementary.

We are an active duty military family and our daughter is a special needs child. She attended Red Mill Elem. for the 2014-2015 school year and has LOVED being at this school. She had Mrs. Jenn Caton and Ms. Bonnie for her special needs class and Mrs. Patterson for her 3rd grade class and has done exceptional this year. Our daughter made more progress in this one year than any of her previous school years at other schools. The Speech and Occupational therapists at this school were so great with our daughter, she really learned so much this year. We are just sad that we received military orders so soon and had to leave this area.

Great school! Good teachers, good family atmosphere, great neighborhood. The best elementary school in Virginia Beach!

We LOVE Red Mill. My daughter has 22 children in her class - which initially concerned me, but her teacher has still been able to give her a lot of individual attention. This is especially helpful as my child has a mild learning disability. Her teacher keeps me posted weekly as to her progress and I could tell from as early as the first 6 weeks of school that the teacher has really made an effort to get to know my child and what her needs are. I have very high expectations for my children's teachers. All of our teachers here have exceeded my expectations. Beyond that, I've been genuinely impressed!

Don't believe everything you read on this site. Go check out the school in person and actually talk to the teachers (not the office staff.) My children attended Red Mill from 2008-2011...we have experienced every grade except 5th. We bought our house so our children could attend this school. We have since moved away, and would do anything to move back. The curriculum in the state of Virginia is top notch. If you move anywhere else in the country, your kids will be leaps and bounds ahead based on the education your kids will receive at Red Mill. The staff is so well-educated and has so much experience. Most of the teachers that my children had, had a wealth of knowledge and experience, and made learning exciting! My children were highly motivated to do their best in that environment. The principal is exceptional. We never experienced the "cold" atmosphere that another person described. You will not be disappointed. This truly is one of the very best schools around! We miss it so much!

This school is fine academically, but seems extremely cold. School tries to keep a distance between the parents and the staff. Everything kept "professional" to the point that they don't seem to care about the students, but rather trying complete checklists of things that have to be done. If you think this school is good, you haven't seen many other schools.

Red Mill is one of the most outstanding elementary schools in the state. Outstanding administrative leadership (principal has been there for almost 15 years), wonderful PTA involvement, and excellent teachers. Gifted resource program is very strong and most cluster teachers really understand gifted learners' needs and social-emotional characteristics. Excellent reputation, reading instruction is top-notch, and PE program helps interested kids to excel and meet fitness goals. We bought our home to specifically be in the Red Mill Elementary and Princess Anne Middle School zone--Red Mill almost seems like a private school with all it has to offer. I have had four children go through K-5 and never regretted it. Love, love, love this school.

We transferred from a local private school and could not be happier or say enough about Red Mill. We have a child that had a reading difficulty and his previous school failed to work with him. Red Mill took an aggressive approach and he is doing so much better. We currently have two children at Red Mill and could not be happier.
