I’m astonished that the grade for this school is a 7/10; the reasoning is as follows:The graduation rate at this school is over 99%, even with the Juvenile Detention Center (Juvenile Jail) statistics diminishing the actual number of 99.8%. The number of students earning honor roll status (3.0 GPA or higher) is over 90%.In the 2023-2024 school year, Kellam HS (KLHS) will be improving its partnership with TCC from 6 on-site(At KLHS) college credit classes to over 20; this number will increase for the 2024-2025 school year. Essentially, granting students an associate degree and an HS diploma at graduation without having to leave the building as they would in a dual enrollment program at other Virginia Beach high schools, saving families between $15k-$40k depending on the student's chosen college.

This school is absolutely terrible when it comes to needs of students with disabilities. The assistant principal had zero care for the disabilities my son had and was condescending during 504 meetings. The math teacher Lives in the 1980’s and if every child doesn’t fit into her box she will fail you. That box includes paper after paper of fill in the blanks and study reviews. Even when student showed proficiency she downgraded until he did review packets. We moved to get our children out of the school. I emailed the principal and never even received an email back. Equity for all students and meeting them where they learn is what Virginia Beach is supposed to be about. This school falls very short. Don’t let the pretty building fool you, it was a terrible 2 years for my son.

We moved from the Great Neck side to Red Mill area to attend PAMS and Kellam High School. Both my children have had great experiences at Kellam and it was the best move we made. Our counselor at Kellam is super helpful and responsive. The athletic department is also top notch and we are so happy both our children could play the sport they love. My children had a few teachers that they didn't care for (but who doesn't) but all in all, we really have no issues and the teachers have been great at communicating.

Our son is a 9th grader and has thrived. This school has brought out the best in him. He is doing great in all of his classes, the teachers truly care about the students learning and doing well. I was apprehensive about this school because of the "reputation" it has, but I can only speak on our experience. I continuously talk to my son about what goes on there and if he see bullying. He has only talked about the racism that he has experienced. Several "Pungo" kids were talking nonsense towards him during the election and made him feel very uncomfortable, but he knows to ignore it unless they start saying things to him specifically that are racially insensitive. He understands ignorance is everywhere and an education is why he is at this school.

There is no accountability for behavior. There is too much drugs going in and not enough graduates going out .
