I had 3 kids who went to this school. It's a small school with the benefits and weaknesses that come along with that. The teachers care. The kids know each other. The administrators are amazing. They became a charter school a few years ago too give them more flexibility and resources. They also have a scholarship available for students to attend Oregon State Forestry program for those interested - its generally not competitive for this who can get accepted to OS - this is an amazing benefit to our students! One of the greatest things about this school is that it is a decent school that exists here in the beautiful McKenzie River area our kids doin't have to bus for hours. Our area has a huge amount of outdoor activities in a National Park quality area.

I went to this school in the late 70's....so my information is from then. It was a much better school then, maybe because there were a lot more students and the teachers were making a more realistic salary at that time. Not only did we have all of the necessary(basic) classes, we had many different electives and P.E. was mandatory 2 of the 4 years. I believe the exercise was good for relieving stress, tension and boredom...but should have been a pass/no pass class. Also with the wonderful choices of electives and after school activities, it definitely helped keep kids involved in school of there was some enjoyment. It's so sad to see the huge decline in school interest since my day...Our teachers need to be paid a whole lot more. After all they are teaching our future. I went to a basketball game up there several years ago and it was sad. There were very few parents or students there to watch the game. Back in my day, in the old gym.....we filled up the downstairs and the upstairs and a lot of times there was standing room only. Game nights were exciting and the whole community looked forward to them...and students had to keep their grade up to play. All of these factors help to keep kids involved in school. Does anyone else remember the good old days at McKenzie High ?

I have three kids in this school, a sophmore, a freshman, and a seventh grader. They have been at Mckenzie since kindergarden. This is the first year we've had problems with a teacher, the other 20 or so have been amazing. Aside from the one individual all the teachers are excited about teaching, excited about the kids, and are eager to help each individual learn. The major issue at the school is a lack of funding partially caused by an overblown salary for the principal. There are few electives, and most classes are run at one time slot per year so there is no flexibility. The small class size makes up for that in some respects, the teachers have time to give each person one on one attention. I have both ends of the learning spectrum, and there is a lot of help for my child who is delayed where I feel at a larger school she would have slipped through the cracks; she is at grade level with the help she receives. However, for a gifted child to be challenged they have to be self motivated and ask or look for ways to expand their learning experiance, the school has no TAG program (teachers are expeced to design and run it themselves). Overall, we love our school. Go Eagles!

The problem with this school is that there is no room for change. Some teachers are very good and the students are their main priority, while most are there for a job. Most of the boys that have been there form grade school up to high school cannot read efficiently. The girls seem to be preferred. The teachers aides are parents of students who have been there since grade school and the courtesy level is gone. The administration is run by over powering members of the community with no need for input from 'the little guys:. You trust that when your child is in school they are being treated fairly and actually being educated. Mckenzie is not doing there job. I have personally removed all three of of my children out of this school.
