My daughter has been a part of the Deborah Brown curriculum since she was 3 1/2 years old. Her overall experience has been awesome. She has been challenged intellectually in every grade, encouraged to perform at the highest level she can attain, shown acceptance and affection beyond anything we could have expected. This is a predominantly African-American school, but as a caucasian my daughter has never been disrespected or in any way made to feel other-than the rest of the student body. Ms. Brown has consistently provided a fabulous environment for her to grow and learn in. She is now in the 7th grade, and we intend for her to go to this institution next year as well. I am saddened the curriculum is only for pre-school to 8th grade, as I would be very happy for her to complete her elementary education with these educators. I am at a loss as to what facility could match the quality of learning experiences she has had here, once she has completed the 8th grade. The school has very high standards, for the students as well as the teachers. I have viewed the other comment here, and it is my sincere belief the reviewer has not taken into account the difficulty in keeping good teachers, this is a state wide issue. In a state where education is often bare-minimum and to be perfectly frank, quite lacking, Sankofa is a rare gem the people of Tulsa are extremely lucky to have.

While I strongly believe this school has the potential to be an excellent learning institution there are some serious concerns. The overall administration under the direction of Deborah Brown is terrible and as a result there is a large turnover of teaching staff which is not condusive to a healthy learning environment. Sankofa once had some good teachers, they were not given the opportunity to acclimate themselves to the curriculum nor were they allowed to adjust the curriculum to what is condusive for children learning on a middle school level. After witnessing the sister school and the way administration on that site operates I noticed a distinctive difference. Sankofa could benefit from an administration being lead by Aisha Brown and it would flourish and grow under her administration. The school claims to be a performing arts school, there is little to no performing arts being taught. The school lacks the curriculum that is needed for a middle school environment; Higher level & skilled teachers in math, science, social studies. I would not make the choice again to send my child here, unless I saw a significant change in administration & a strong teaching staff set in place.
