Lately my experience at this school has been bad. I feel that the parents DO NOT have a voice. They DO NOT listen to the kids nor the parents. Having the teachers and "counselor" and principal making fun and bullying the kids teachers making STUPID remarks towards and against students. Before it was one of the best school but now it's going down. And I'm thinking of moving my kids from there. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL AT ALL!!!!! I DO NOT!!!!!

My boys started off at the school and I was so happy with the teachers, the environment, and the community, that I decided to apply at the school and now I work here. This is my fourth year working at the school. I really enjoy working here with all the stuff, all the students, and with all the parents. The teachers always communicate well about how my kids are doing. I always get communication from the administration, communication about school activities, etc.

There is a very strong sense of community at this school. The staff, students and families look out for each other. We usually outperform the other schools in this neighborhood.

I wouldn't recommend this unprofessional school with unlicensed school teacher. Soo unprofessional.

In 2022 this school is doing a lot of good things. All students are receiving socio-emotional literacy and computer skills training. Students have ambitious and realistic individual goals to try and bounce back from learning loss during the pandemic. Staff take the "community" aspect of the school name seriously and are creating more and more opportunities for parental involvement. There are schoolwide events inviting the parents in on a regular basis. The school is partnering with organizations to provide support to struggling families. All students receive free lunch, free school supplies, and free books. Of course there is no school where everything is perfect, but this school has a culture of believing in the success of the students and addressing the problems ahead. Some issues like a high teacher turn-over have many explanations in a state like Arizona. There are also many many employees of the school who have been there for nearly a decade or more. Don't overlook Southside!

This school suffered from poor and divided leadership in the past, however still managed to increase their state proficiency scores from 2% to almost 70% since they opened in a very disadvantaged neighborhood. When the state standards and assessment changed, their scores tanked, like most schools, but they are slowly making gains. The school is now under new, active leadership. Students benefit from having two adults in each classroom, new curriculum, they offer free clubs, tutoring and after school program, free meals and snacks, STEAM instruction, music and daily PE. Since COVID hit, they have had weekly parent meetings and have expanded their health office services. Students receive free books, scholarships, watches for graduation, and even Christmas gifts. If you have a chance, check out their library remodel - and they also recently introduced a spice station and salad bar at lunchtime. They are always working to improve and do more for the community!

Christine Curtis should be way behind the scene at the school. Unfortunately she tends to have favorites and If you are not on her list of favorites, you can feel it. There tends to be tons of micromanaging and poor leadership across the board. It almost feels as though she isn't fond of the male species. For shame!

I attended this school 6-9th grade and it was the best experience ever! I originally needed to go to Sierra but there were too many students. My mom found SCS and I couldn't leave the school! The small class sizes make it easy to communicate with the teachers and ask for help, even having long time friends. I still keep in contact with my middle school friends and some teachers and staff. I had so many opportunities handed to me like being the student body president, going to field trips, and even earning a 500 scholarship! Not really sure how things are at the moment, but it was worthwhile. Keep in mind not all schools are perfect. There were some instances where the students get affected about what's going on with teachers and staff. But, it all works out in the end.

This school is poorly managed and full of cronyism between the superintendent and teachers. There is a very high turnover rate of teachers, and many do not receive the classroom or curricular support they need to be efficient in their jobs and are relegated to the job of babysitter rather than instructor. Discipline is another issue; often, troublemaking students are not dealt with apropriately and are allowed to continue their behaviors with few repercussions. There are a few shining spots - the sports teams, for example, and many of the students but I simply cannot, in good conscience, give this school a good review.

Hi! I went to this school in 8th grade and I just wanna say my experience was pretty great. The teachers are all nice, helpful, and overall, very well educated. They all went to college, earned their bachelors, and even still attend teaching classes. I learned a lot over a short period of time being there. I actually learned more in one year at Southside than I did in two years at Utterback. The teachers actually want you to succeed and they do their very best in making it happen. The whole staff is great - from the elementary school teachers to the middle school teachers to the counselor, the principle and assistant principle, the librarian, even the lunch ladies and janitors. The food is not only free, but also very healthy and nutritious - unlike many other big-name schools. There's even a pomegranate tree in the back of the school which the students are allowed to eat from! Overall, very very great school. It's where I had my best memories, experiences, and grades. Don't underestimate it because of its size. Send your kid there!
