We have had a wonderful experience at Martell. The teachers are exceptional and we couldn't be happier.

Martell is a an awesome school! The staff are amazing, the classrooms look colorful and Martell teaches kids about kindness and making a difference. But as much as I love Martell I also do have some issues with the school. Like one of my problems is there isn’t enough homework for the students. My child gets two pages of homework three days a week. My last problem Martell doesn’t have the best kids, what I mean is kids at Martell are rude. When my child was in third grade there was this bossy and rude girl who was being mean to my kid. But I love Martell it was a great place.

Martell is a wonderful school for the children to learn and play. The teachers are exceptional with behavior and learning. I moved to the area for this reason. I want my children to receive the best education possible and I believe they are. My children are happy. The Martell staff gets along with each other and the parents. The office staff is second to none. Having children excited for school is a blessing. Thank you Martell!

Students have no discipline and staff will do nothing to prevent bad behavior. Kids as young as Kindergarten know they don’t have to listen to their teacher because there are no consequences. The school literally stopped giving letter grades this year – likely to blur their historically poor performance, there is high student turnover (Martell is school for Somerset and other apartments as earlier noted), revolving door of principals and teachers annually. Troy Schools mandates iPads from 3rd grade on to eliminate paper, so you have a sea of zombies staring at screens, playing music and bumping into each other before school. Remember when we were in school and your teacher actually corrected your handwriting, grammar or speech? Not here, otherwise you might hurt someone's feelings. Martell proudly proclaim each class is split equally by gender, race, behavior patterns, etc. Is there something wrong with grouping based on ability so people don’t fall through the cracks? The school (and likely the district) seems more concerned about social engineering than about actual education. Kids who are naturally smart are bored and not challenged in this one size fits all education while those who need more attention likely won’t get it as the classes are crowded and class time is wasted by the teachers having to beg the unruly kids to behave. It seems like at least once a week there must be a gimmick to get kids to learn – pajama day, hat day, etc. It’s the inmates running the asylum.

Great Teachers horrible principal! Lesser is a mean and disrespectful not only to parents, but the kids. he's nice only if he knows someone is watching him.

The prior review of the principal being "a dictator from a gang infested school" in Warren is unfair. He is a good guy who goes out of his way to be pleasant and courteous. He is in a tough spot as the unruly behavior of the student body that has been allowed for years unfortunately warrants a 'dictator.' It has been noted that bad behavior is common here. That is true. Martell is packed to capacity - they are now the school that houses kids from Somerset Apartments and another large complex in Troy - with that comes constant student turnover. The curriculum is very underwhelming and mundane. The parents should complement the teacher's role, not have to be a substitute for them like they do here. For the teachers, most of last school year was focused on lobbying for a bond and a new contract for themselves - that definitely showed in the classrooms and morale in the building. Parent involvement is lacking too, it always seem to be the same core 10-15 parents that head all the extracurriculars. Not at all impressive for the hype that Troy schools seem to get.

Martell is a good elementary school. Any concerns that I've had were quickly addressed by the staff and principal. I've observed a lot of family and staff involvement with the children, as well as, an enormous amount of participation in the school's annual Family Fun Night. Due to the excellent instruction at school, my child is ahead in reading and math. This school has a School Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program in place. My family is happy with Martell.

The current principal is a dictator from a gang infested, South Warren high school .nice choice. He actually made a parent cry in front of us. On another occasion he lost his temper and shouted at us. Frustration, tension, and conflict are common here. The curriculum is sub-par. Your child will not be the best prepared for Middle School. If you want your child to be scarred for life send them to Martell. Hopefully the new superintendent will take action to clean this place up. There are many nice, hardworking teachers here, but the administration is not appropriate for an elementary school. 8 out of 10? Not possible. Most Troy Schools are great. Not this one. Run!

We are starting our 3rd year at Martell and Love it! We know firsthand the great efforts the Teachers and Principal, put forth to work with parents and children. I have found the communication from them great, as well as the willingness to make adjustments to benefit the child s learning. All while in communications with the parents. There are many family functions put on by PTO that are well attended, even with the minimal parking. Happy to see the Parking lot being revamped this summer, and cannot wait to start the 14-15 school year.

Martell Elementary -- What a school , If i had the authority I would close down this school which do not takes interest in child development. There are not ample teachers in the school so be prepared your kid to be taught by a student teacher who is under training . There are no extra activities , no walking the extra mile to make students knowledgeable but on the contrary they are not able to complete the syllabus as defined by School district. There are lot of items to be penned alas I can say avoid your kids attending Martell the worst school in the district.

We had to leave Martell due to bullying and character issues of students. The staff will not discipline the bullies, and in some cases actually reward them with additional responsibilities as if they have leadership skills! If you think there is no bullying at Martell, you may need to look in your own household. I found parent participation mediocre. The new principal demands silence during lunch (yes, lunch) or children are punished with missing recess. MEAP test scores are the focus at Martell and they are not all that great. For example, click on the "test scores" link at this website for 5th grade Science in 2013, only 16% passed! Send your children to a more nurturing school.

We have been a Martell Family for 6 years and have had wonderful teachers in each and every grade. The new Principal last year was a great improvement, he is always visible in the building and handles difficult situations very well. The new secretary is very firm, she has a tough job. I would not describe her as mean. Our only issue is parking, which is planned to be taken care of with the new bond that was passed. All support staff and specials teachers are wonderful. This school is a family-like community! I HIGHLY recommend Martell!

My daughter's class teacher is good but the secretary is SO awful! She is the worst one we have met. Very mean to kids and parents. I wouldn't suggest to go to this school.

I have been a part of the Martell family for many many years. I went here as a child, and I was labeled by a teacher in her first year (who is STILL THERE) as a special education child. At the time I had undiagnosed ADHD, and she bullied me mercilessly that year in school. Some of the other children remembered this and continued to harass me throughout the years, while many others forgot. My parents had to have me tested outside of the school for my IQ, and I was not diagnosed with ADHD until I was 21. Fast forward 20 or so years, my two children no go to this school. My older child had no problems, and loved all the teachers. My younger child had great difficulties at this school though... In kindergarten, my child was labeled as a problem and was sent home daily. My child was told, "If you misbehave, you're going home." What child would want to stay in that environment after being told this!?!?! I was so glad to hear that the principal retired that year, and since then there have been no problems. Support staff is wonderful, the gym teacher is amazing, art is fantastic, and so is everyone else...except that one teacher who remains from my childhood.
