First, regarding the facilities. We have been told that the "pod schools," of which RES is one of 3, will be the next renovated facilities in Augusta County. I anticipate that by 2015 school year. The future middle school is at least a decade away. We would like to see more specific application for Gifted students before grade 4. As with most schools, the focus is on catching up the poorer students than pushing the challenging students. The AYP issues are not particularly well addressed by the administration, but I don't care much about that bureaucracy anyway. We have seen some teachers show an exceptional amount of creativity and ability to apply new methods...but we also have seen some teachers closer to retirement who seem to be mailing it in. Overall, we sense that the teachers are invested and care about the students. We see much more of the Assistant Principal than the actual Principal, maybe that is by design. We have consciously been very involved parents and the teachers and administration seem to have been welcoming. The PTA could do more, they seem to be comfortable organizing school-wide events and less interested in developing bigger picture ideas.

I have two children at this school. We moved from another district in Virginia where one child was in the gifted program. We came here and was given the run around about him being tested. When I have requested a conference with all my child's teachers only one shows up. How can the math teacher answer questions I have about reading? The principal gives text book answers when asked why the school hasn't made AYP. Saying the level they are to achieve is to high is not an appropriate answer. The school administration also doesn't listen about concerns until something happens that could get hurt happens. Thankfully no one did get hurt and that someone finally did something about the bus driver.

All three of my children have gone to this school. The teachers and support staff are top-notch, in my opinion. The emphasis on learning is well managed and always in the forefront of whatever is being done at the school. The school may be older than some, but the structure is only a small part of the story. The teachers, from pre-K to the fifth grade are truly interested in their students and do a tremendous job with limited funding. If your child is at Riverheads elementary, you can be assured he or she is important to everyone working there. One visit to a classroom will show that each room is full of colorful, motivating materials and the children are well cared for. The level of parent involvement is unsurpassed! Thanks RES!!!

Disappointed with lack of response to address special concerns/needs of students. Honesty and openness lacking. Feel parents are met with rehearsed answers instead of sincere concern for children who have needs that may not be convenient to deal with.
