Teachers/admin seem miserable. Teachers don’t make an effort to connect with parents. Rarely email or call so you’re left in the dark and rely on your child letting you know how school is going. I haven’t had any specific negative experiences with the school but when you compare it to Primrose, the overall quality, communication and experience is lacking. It’s amazing that the teachers aren’t expected to have an online presence. The curriculum and programs that the school uses aren’t accessible online either.

The school is very accommodating to students and parents. They prepare you well for the transition to the Middle School. They have a lot of fun projects fir kids and families to attend!

The administration and staff demonstrate a deepcommitment to improve student outcomes in all subject areas. My child had an amazing group of teachers who took the time to build her confidence, support in areas when she struggled and made sure she knew they had high expectations for everyone.

My child has been there for three years. Good to great teachers. Appropriate challenge. Advanced programs have been available and valued. Better, more advanced tech is being introduced. Good music program. Multiple clubs. Well run, well organized. A positive environment. Institutional food a minus. Building is aging. Class size OK but verging on too big. Supportive parents and active PTA. I appreciate and value the staff. SIS is not the top of the heap but near the top. A good, almost great, school. My child is more than ready for middle school.

The school is fairly large but the class sizes seem appropriate. In the 3 years my daughter has been there all of her teaches have been wonderful and have gone out of their way to make school a very positive experience for her. The bus ride home can be long (as opposed to short on way to school) and parent pickup can be a little crowded.

My review is somewhat mixed. The positives at SIS are a terrific music program. A nice selection of after school activities and a wonderful PTA that supports lots of fun events like Author's Day and Birthday Party. The school has some exceptional teachers. Unfortunately, there are also a number of teachers who are well below par. SIS does have a significant bullying problem which is not always addressed the way it should be. The math curriculum which is Everyday Math, does not teach mastery and many kids seem to struggle with it. In spite of great disapproval and negative feedback from parents and teachers, the administration is not at all willing to consider an alternative. This school and the district as a whole, are very fortunate to have many involved parents who are willing to be partners in their children's educational experience. Unfortunately, many of the teachers seem to forget that. And at times, seem unappreciative. In final, I would say that Somers Intermediate School is a "Good School". I would not give it the distinction of calling it a "Great School."

The best thing about this school is the fantastic principal, John Griffiths. He ensures that the school runs well, and that he optimizes learning at every opportunity. He truly cares about the children, staff and the school. My son is very happy here, as was my daughter. I hope he keeps doing what he does so well.
