St. John's is a welcoming school community with highly dedicated teachers and involved parents. Students are challenged academically and inspired to discover their gifts through faith and service to others. We love SJE!

My daughter has gotten a superb education. She is an excellent reader and writer. I work in the public schools and the skills she has learned are far superior than those I see in the public system. The academic expectations are very high. I also love that she is given the gift of learning the value of service to others and strong values. St. John's also instills a strong work ethic. I can't say enough about how great this school has been for my child.

I love St. John the Evangelist community for so many reasons! We have great kids, nice parents and super teachers. Our children learn how to be loving and responsible young people. Academic excellence and Christian values go hand in hand to make this a very special learning environment where every kid counts and everyone can learn to make a difference.

St. John the Evangelist is a hidden gem. The teachers are qualified and compassionate. The community is small enough so that you get to know everyone, but large enough to meet everyone's needs. It's a Catholic School not just in name, but also in action. The families here are committed to supporting each other and supporting the school. Right when you walk in the door, you can tell this school is something special! I am proud to have three of my children who have graduated from here who entered high school well prepared and living their faith.

SJE is a faith-centered, welcoming school of caring and supportive parents, clergy, teachers, and staff. The school's focus, while strong on academics, is on the nurturing, loving development of the individual's character. SJE students mature beyond their years during their time at the school, with older students helping younger students. As an inclusive parochial school, SJE accommodates the needs of all children. There are academic enrichment programs at every level of student ability, but more importantly, the emphasis is on sharing our gifts - whatever they may be - with those who need our help. Service is a major component of the curriculum, with the school council's entire focus being on running service projects throughout the year.

St. John's is a wonderful school and caring community with challenging academics, an engaging principal and teachers, presence of the amazing IHM Sisters, traditions, and many fun and rewarding opportunities to get involved for students and parents. Students are well-rounded and well prepared for high school - academically, spiritually and with a great sense of service to others. We love SJE!

My husband and I have had 4 children go through St. John's. They've excelled in high school so they were clearly prepared by the teachers at SJE! And, the school's faculty and administration has always been receptive to what my family needs vs what the standard protocol might be. They've always considered my children individually, not as part of a mass. And, we love the Catholic aspect of the school. There's school Masses, Reconciliation, the Rosary, and obvious signs in each classroom that the kids attend a Catholic school.

All three of my sons graduated from SJE and are now very successful in high school. In addition to the fine academic preparation they received they will forever be a part of a wonderful community of SJE alums; in fact my sons all count their SJE friends among their best friends, even though they don't all attend the same high schools. It is a great community of faith, service, and family, more than just a great school.

SJE is more than just a school, it's a wonderful community full of active, caring parents, teachers and staff. The presence of the IHM Sisters gives the kids a living, breathing example of God at work in their midst! We feel lucky to have been able to send our kids to this school.

As an alumni and parent of 3 students I can whole heatedly recommend SJE to anyone looking for a loving, caring community in which to educate your child. The teachers are top-notch and are incredibly creative and motivated. We have a fantastic new principal who is excited adding new programs such as the classics, STEM and International Studies. My son graduated from 8th grade last year and was fully prepared to thrive in high school. But beyond the academics, I can't say enough about the community. It takes a village to raise a family and I love my SJE village. You can't go wrong with SJE.

Our child is thriving at SJE both academically & socially. The entire K class is friends with no exclusions. All of the K students are reading and writing full sentences & creative stories. My son's math skills are developing quickly and the teacher is challenging him with multiplication to keep him interested. The K teacher runs a tight ship because she loves these children and believes they can meet the standards. She sees the potential and uniqueness of each of her children and works warmly with them so they can meet the expectations. The Value Code is stressed with class discussion and asking "what it means to be a friend." A lot of very old reviews here echo "how SJE used to be" according to some veteran parents. True, the facility is old but clean, secure, and adequate. Today's faculty and staff embrace technology with "smartboards" in the classrooms and multimedia instruction. Primary classes are large at 22+ children but all have a full time assistant so the ratio is halved. The front office secretary is retiring after 46 years so there will be some fresh efficiency. The parents are welcoming. You can be as involved as you'd like. We are very happy with SJE.

We chose this school because we were looking beyond straight academics: which environment could transmit the values that we want our children to be instilled in, one that could provide emotional and spiritual support. This is exactly what we've found. My husband and I often remark to each other how much we love this school. The people who make up this school - from the Sisters to other faculty, to the principal to the families -are just such GOOD people. Watching the kids play at recess, I'm blown away at how kind the kids are to each other, how their play circles effortlessly transform into different groupings - everyone gets along. Our children are flourishing and becoming good citizens. This school is nurturing them. Because of this strong and close community, there is a high level of parent involvement. If you love a place, you want to help in whatever way you can. I'm not sure how the academics compare, but for us, it's secondary to the development of our kids as people.

As a recent graduate from St. John's, I am personally very happy with my experience at this school. The teachers were kind and always caring, and my peers were at all times supportive and loving. Having said this, I can definitely understand why many people are complaining about the "unwelcoming environment". This is a very small school, and each class grows very tightly knit as a group from pre-k up to the 8th grade. I have seen several different instances in which a new student has come to this school - in some, the child fit in perfectly (for example, me); in others, the child was rudely shunned and excluded. I cannot say anything more helpful than that it depends solely on the child and the group of kids in the grade s/he is going into. As for academics, I personally found myself very well prepared for high school! However, several of my friends from St. John's have complained that they found themselves woefully unprepared. Again - it depends on the individual. My advice - start your child at this school from the beginning of their academic career and by 8th grade, s/he will be a successful individual.

We're a large family that has had to travel a good deal for my husband's job, so we have experienced a lot of elementary schools. And St. John the Evangelist in Silver Spring is our favorite too date. The academics ARE VERY competitive, but since the community is nurturing and small, the demands are not too oppressive. Our children are happy to go to school here every day, and I know first-hand that they will be WELL prepared for high school and college with this foundation.

I am an alumni of the school and my child has been enrolled in St Johns from pre-K through his current 2nd grade. He is thriving in this wonderful, supportive environment ! Contrary to other reviews i have read here, I have witnessed a wonderful and caring environment between students of all grade levels. Also, the sense of community is very strong with so many parents pitching in to help make it all happen.
