St. Andrew's-Sewanee has provided the educational experience we dreamed of for our children. We are so grateful for the faculty who provide not only outstanding academic instruction but also address the needs and growth of the whole student, which keeps this boarding student parent at peace. I am so glad to be a SAS parent!

My son is a current sophomore at St. Andrews Sewanee School and has thrived in this environment. He enjoys the challenging curriculum and wide variety of extra curricular activities to choose from. He is taking advantage of programs not offered in other schools in our area. The instructors care about the students and their families and want each student to be successful. My other sons cannot wait to reach the age to also attend SAS! Go Mountain Lions!

Our son will be a junior next year. He is so integrated into his school. Academically and culturally he has found an understanding that I doubt could been found in many other schools. He has choices and would not consider any other place to finish. The list a redeeming qualities of this institution is much to long for this space, sufice to say, visit and if it is a fit you will never regret the choice. My older son attended as well and thrived. He holds SAS close in his heart.

    1. It's been a very unique and adventurous experience at Saint Andrew Sewanee. First time in high school, new to the state, and first year at a private school. The student body is very small for a high school and middle school (245), but it is very easy to connect with each other. For example the Freshmen class there were only 45 students. I have made so many close friends that I will dearly miss. You also have a lot of free time to use, especially work periods. There are many international students but most of them prominently Chinese. A huge chunk of the student body are days students who come from Sewanee, Winchester, Manchester, and etc. New students have a hard time, because most students at this school have known each other for many years all the way up to 6th grade. Especially difficult for foreign/nonwhite students. A good side is that everyone at this school is nice and mostly educated.

I understand that American boarding schools tend to force foreign students American ways and English and I'm not strongly opposed to that in general. I know some foreigners hang around with their countrymen ALL THE TIME and are never involved in American community. Forcing American ways and English is appropriate for that kind of foreigners. However, the problem is, people from my country tend not to be friendly with each other naturally and don't have strong ethnic bond when abroad. There are actually many people from my country who hate their own country and their countrymen, and those people are generally unfriendly and mean to their countrymen when abroad. Therefore, people from my country are quite vulnerable when they are deprived of freedom to hang around with each other and to use our language. They will be isolated from their countrymen easily and their identitiy may be threatened. The situation is pretty serious and many people from my country suffer from being isolated when abroad. It's not good to force American ways and English too much for people from my country because they don't have a strong ethnic bond and gets isolated easily. We don't want to lose our identity.

I did not go to SAS but went to another private school where my dad was the head of school. In regards to the post about foreign studens not being allowed to speak their native language and hang out together: this is actually a routine policy at most prep boarding schools and a really good example of "tough love" . You are not going to learn English or make friends outside of your ethnic community if you constantly stay inside your ethnic comfort zone. Often times the parents enroll their kids in American boarding schools specifically so their kids will learn fluent English with an American accent. Does discrimination happen? I'm sure it does but that's real life. It's in the kids best interest to be forced outside the bubble, learn a new language and make new friends. My dad's rule at his school was that you had to speak English only Monday through Friday and find ways to make friends outside the ethnic clique. It worked for most of the kids concerned.
