  My child is bright and successful, but this is not reflective of the school here in Sedalia. Coming from another district I see many alarming trends. It's dark, with few windows, and feels like a prison. There is ignored school violence where teachers look away, and the administration glossing over these issues. My child has seemed to have progressed slowly compared to elementary despite being in an accelerated learning. There are few teachers who push these kids to succeed, but the next class period there's another who just seems to want to get through the day. As a parent this is a frustrating thing to witness, these are still young children, (5th and 6th graders) and their first experience into a rotating instruction is one where only half of their teachers care about their success. I'd love to see these kids back into an elementary school setting. This model simply doesn't work for these kids and it's doing them and the teachers a disservice. Research suggests that kids this young, even up to 7th grade, do far worse in testing than those in a elementary style classroom.   3 stars chould have been 2. First: my two children both attended SMS. Both have excelled throughout their student careers, and neither has ever been at odds with a teacher or the administration. I have no hidden agenda. This review references attitudes both they and I saw in several teachers at the school. The admins either tolerate or don't recognize it. There are also outstanding teachers, so 3 stars. That said... SMS has a banner outside touting how they respect the individual: really?! Both of my kids were disappointed in their years there. They told of hateful, condescending teachers who often handed out group punishments instead of singling out troublemakers. That offers no incentive for good kids to behave well, as they'll be punished anyway. Students had to eat with certain others at lunch, where talking (whispering) was not allowed for much of that time. Both kids LOVED Skyline Elem. My oldest also loved Jr High and loves HS. My youngest looks forward to 7th grade at SCJHS, where she fully expects to again be treated based on her actions and attitude, not just sneared at by a small but active group of teachers who maybe should have chosen another career. ...More Reviews
