To-date (7 years and counting), our whole family has had a great experience at Sloat. With one exception (a teacher who is no longer at the school), our children have had skilled, caring and devoted teachers and aftercare staff who have understood their needs and tried to challenge and support them. We have been lucky to have the same principal for 5+ years who is good at navigating the complexity of managing a school site within SFUSD. She has provided a sense of stability, consistency and commitment to the student body through tumultuous times, including the pandemic zoom year. Sloat has also been a welcoming community for us as parents. There is an active sense of volunteerism within the parent community and an openness to parent commitments of time and talent. There are numerous "extra curriculars" that kids can participate in through the school as well- gardening, chorus/glee, participation in the Chinese new year parade (for those in aftercare), musical instruments in 4th and 5th and sports team organized and coached by the parent community. The school campus is one of the things we liked most when touring. It has a lot of nice outdoor and green spaces that are taken care of by parents, students and staff. Our kids really love the campus and ask to go there on weekends and summer months. There are fundraising events but participation is not required or tracked and the asks are not more than we expected (and from what we've heard they're pretty similar to other schools). PCO (PTA) meetings are open to all and there are no membership dues to participate. The school student body is diverse in terms of socioeconomics, languages spoken and race/ethnicity, and roughly reflects the overall diversity of the city. There is also diversity in the admin, staff and teaching body. As a mixed race family with children of color, we have been happy with our experience at Sloat. If I really tried, I'm sure I could come up with criticisms, but overall we feel very lucky to be at Sloat.

Firstly, we are a working-class family with a child in their first year at Sloat. We love their teacher, and believe it was the best match given my child's sensitivity to their environment around them. The principal, Ms. Abdolcader, is easy to approach with questions or concerns, as is my child's teacher who has been beyond supportive and helpful to make sure my child has their needs met in the classroom, both academically and socially. However, there is A LOT of white privilege in this school, and the active PCO committee is mainly comprised of this lot, so working-class values and concerns are not heard as loudly as the need for, let's be honest, donations. I do, though, love the other aspects of diversity at this school. More equity and less of an emphasis on donations would make this school perfect for us.

There was a PCO president from this school who spread a lot of hurtful gossip about people and then went to newspaper about the local middle school that this schools feeds into and spread half-truths to the newspaper and got it published as true when it was just her opinions and pattern of gossip disguised as concern.

A great school with an active group of parents within the PCO helps staff to create an even better environment for our kids.

My daughter has been attending CSS for the past 5 years, and she has had a great experience at the school. Both the teachers and leadership have been great. She is getting a great education, and has developed some solid friendships.

Commodore Sloat is an inclusive school with an active parent community, truly exceptional teachers and an engaged and effective principal. My family loves the outdoor education and wide open space, the modular classrooms, the additional art, dance, library, music, PE and other staff and the speech & social workers and para teacher involvement. The PCO fills in gaps by purchasing technology, bettering the classroom environment and adding extra staff. Sloat is an under the radar top SF school.

from the first minute we were asked to give money and the money requests didn't stop ever and only increased during the year. by the time the shutdown happened I didn't want to walk inside the school cause of fear of glares because I didn't give money for an auction.

The people here have great experience probably come from a elite school background and then you get a better experience. I don't feel treated equally here and my kid has less good treatment.

Both of my kids attended Commodore Sloat. We couldn't of asked for a better school. Principal, teachers, and parent community were top notch. We would highly recommend this school.

Along with other families, we're deciding if we want to move out of the city to find an adequate inclusive school.

Sloat has been great. The teachers are engaged, the parents are engaged, and the principal is outstanding. We couldn't ask for a better experience. There are, of course, things you wish you could change. But none of those things are fundamentals at Sloat. We highly recommend it.

Commodore Sloat is an amazing school with outstanding teachers and very strong community of parents that we have been fortunate to be a part of since 2015.

It has been really bad! The principal and the teacher have not been very helpful at all because they just dont care enough!

My older daughter was going to a private kindergarten and when we got into Sloat it was an easy decision to switch from private to public. Sloat has a great starting time, strong parent group, great teachers, and a supportive environment. After 5 years at Sloat she graduated and is now at Aptos. She is getting straight As there. My youngest also goes there and loves it. They do a good job matching the students with the teachers.

My son has been at this school for two years and both his Kindergarden and 1st grade teachers (Mrs. Wentworth and Mrs. Siddle) are great. He did so many special projects in Mrs. Siddle class. His reading is improving. He is happy and loves his teachers. Principal John is fantastic. He knows the children by names and can be seen joining my son's class during their lunch period. My son attends the YMCA after school program and enrichment classes. I am glad he got into this school.

My daughter has been welcomed into the Commodore community with open arms. She was accepted late August 2013 after school had already started. Immediately the Principal came over and introduced himself and made me and my child feel like we had found a great school. The campus is open and beautiful, the area is safe, the parents are caring and raise a substantial amount of money yearly for additional teachers and activities. The after school program is good too. Engineering, Lego Building and Swimming are some of the classes that your child can sign up for. I am a huge fan of Commodore Sloat!

I have been teaching at Sloat for more than 15 years now and can still say what I said the year I started here... "this school is fantastic, inclusive, and wonderfully diverse. I'm lucky to be a part of it's community" I decided to bring my daughter here to join the Sloat Family when she was in kindergarten. She is about to graduate and move on to Middle School. The experiences she's had here, and the friends she's made will stay with her and help her grow. I'm very proud to be a part of this team. I have watched hundreds of kids blossom while here; kids with special needs as well as kids without... thanks to the dedication of both the "SpedEd" and "RegEd" teachers.

My son attended kindergarten at Commodore Sloat. It was a very nurturing environment. His teacher, Ms. Loia, was amazing. She cared so much about all the kids and was a fantastic teacher. I am so happy he had his first big kid school experience with her and the wonderful staff at CS. The extra circular/ enrichment activities were wonderful as well - the art, gardening and music were a great way to introduce the kids to a diverse education. Keep up the great work CS!
