This is a largely populated middle school, so students can easily fit in since there is a variety of students that attend. Majority of the students are friendly and inviting to new students. If your child does have issues with other students action is taken to stop bullying or other negative behaviors and not just swept under the rug. Counselors are available to the students as well as drop ins to other staff if students are having a hard day or need to talk. Teachers are friendly and quickly answer questions about their students through email on parent square. A lot of teachers provide after school help to students. Since my child has started here I have met many of the staff from counselors to teachers to aids. Most want the best for their students and ask how they can help and support students needs. They use encouraging words for students talents, dreams and passions and try to help with supplies if available. They even try to encourage new hobbies or sports for the students. I think highly of this school and all it continues to do for my child.

Our children are falling prey to the environment @AIS!! Many are being passed over & left behind with no care or concern from administration & teachers (not all the teachers). As a parent with legitimate concerns you should be able to contact the teachers and administrators to ask question, & voice concerns and to advocate for your child. NOPE, not at this school. We tried to from the first day to stress that we are involved parents and we want to have an open line of communication with all the teachers. They DO NOT want you involved or questioning what they are doing... EVER!! Addressing issues and concerns with the teachers isn't possible without scheduling a meeting and them making a full blown "production" out of it with all 3 teachers and 1-3 of the school administrators. Alvarado Intermediate does NOT openly welcome parents, they make you feel like you shouldn't be there unless it's on their terms. The LACK of communication from the campus is ridiculous! Rarely do you get ample notice for events, field trips or anything else. The Principal lacks the experience needed in both the class room and administrator role. When you bring forth concerns to her directly, she responds with a generic - almost memorized response that and has to true feeling and come off as "I hear you but could carless about what what you have to say, because it's my way or noway".If you want the best for your children and their education, while feeling welcome to be a part of it then Alvarado Intermediate Schools NOT for you!! This is by far the WORST school in the district!

The school just got renovated and the learning environment is very nice. There are many opportunities because of the variety of electives. Overall, this school doesn't have many problems and i encourage all kids to have a chance to learn there.

I cannot see why students should be upset about the dress code. The dress code keeps everybody wearing appropriate clothing and nothing that shows too much skin. The teachers are great. There is also free after school tutoring for students that need help. After school tutoring is also good for the honors students because they help the students that are in tutoring. The traffic has also gotten a lot better. Fights are rare and are broken up quickly and the students do have consequences. The catwalk is convenient for the students who walk and is monitored by the staff to prevent trouble. Overall, it's a great school.

Not crazy about the principal. The traffic to get there is horrible, too. I agree to following from a previous review: "The principal NEVER avails herself to the parents, is difficult to understand in voice messages home, and there is absolutely NO opportunity for parental involvement, unless you are of the majority demograoh(s) of the school." and "The district is aware of these problems at this school and has failed to address them. " When will they get rid of this principal?!

This is THE worst school that my children have attended. The administration is almost never available, the traffic situation is horrendous EVERY day of the week, the students are NOT well-disciplined like some other reviewers have claimed. In fact, there are MANY fights that occur in the immediate area surrounding the school between students of different races and those that come from the local high school and continuation school to loiter around. The "thoroughfare" walkway near the school is littered with gang graffiti, the school in in an area that is ripe for all sorts of crimes to be committed. The principal NEVER avails herself to the parents, is difficult to understand in voice messages home, and there is absolutely NO opportunity for parental involvement, unless you are of the majority demograoh(s) of the school. The uniform policy is antiquated, at best, and should be updated to reflect the current way that certain "groups" of students dress. The other middle schools in the district aren't any better, in fact they are worse, just as the high school that those others feed into. The district is aware of these problems at this school and has failed to address them.
