Unfortunatley, this school has gone down tremendously . My son is a junior and every year has become more worse and the turnover rate even greater. There is no accountability for the students, and zero control over the students. There needs to be more security. ALso the bathrooms are disgusting, dirty or full of students smoking or vaping. Because they cant control the amount of students they lock and close them, so no bathrooms are available. If a bathroom is available there is no toilet paper and it is very unsanitary.

The IB Program is challenging and really prepares students for college. The IB teachers are easily the best in the district, although Dr. Minor lacks polish and charisma. He’s not a great representative for the program. My kids were very prepared for college and had no trouble with the transition.

The IB experience is top-notch and definitely intense and challenging. The instruction is high quality and I feel like my kids will be very well prepared for college. English and History departments are especially excellent. The curriculum in the IB Program is cross-disciplinary so there is often a connection between what kids are learning across the subjects. There is a heavy homework load, but it is manageable and teachers are for the most part extremely caring and engaging. Dr. Minor is probably the only negative about the IB experience. He lacks polish and charisma and doesn't represent the program well. Amy Earl is wonderful and heads the CP division of the program.

If your student is competent in any way to handle themselves when talking to teachers and counselors, they will have a much better time. The teachers at Riverview can be your best friend or your mortal enemy, depending on how you act in class and how much respect you show for them and your peers. Many of the teachers firmly believe in students taking ownership of their own learning, so they would much prefer that students talk to them to resolve issues before the parent sends an email. The guidance counselors at this school have hundreds of students they are juggling, so don't expect the VIP treatment. Towards the end of the year, they are never in their office because they are either proctoring AP tests or finalizing transcripts for seniors who are getting ready to graduate. The Principal does an amazing job of communicating school events to students with her weekly Sunday phone calls.

Overpopulated as of last year and kids are having to sit on the ground outside the cafeteria with no covering eating their food on the ground where their are stains, food, bugs gum, and etc.

My son came from East Bay to this school and he had never gotten in trouble but as soon as he got here he would constantly get searched for no reason. They would never find anything but continued to search him, they were obviously profiling him and covering it up telling me "We received an anonymous tip" every time. Very bad school, I will be removing him as soon as possible

I have a freshman at this school and so far, his experience has been great. The one noticeable area for improvement would be in the guidance department. I speak from personal experience as well as comments from many other parents. While student body is huge, the large guidance staff could learn some basic customer service skills and be a little friendlier and more helpful, especially to new parents/ students who are not used to navigating course selections and actually need..."guidance"! My child's counselor is the head of this department and I expected so much more and a lot more professionalism when dealing with her. I pretty much had to prime her to get any information out of her and may as well have done all the research on my own. My son was assigned to a class he had already taken ("no...we don't get those records") so I called to see what his options were. The head counselor acted like it was a bother to have to look it up and provided me with two options as everything else was full. I selected a class then asked her where the classroom was located and she didn't know! Having never been there myself, I made a wild guess that it was near the gym since it was a sports related class and she responded, "Well, I guess it's near there". Wow! My husband stopped by the school the day before school started and got the same cold treatment from one of the counselors that was assisting people. As a business professional, I can say that attitude and professionalism starts with the leader (guidance dept.) and filters down to your people. It would be nice to have the administration address this so that the guidance experience is a pleasant one for all.

My daughter just completed 9th grade. She did enjoy her teachers. I was confused as to the EOC exams and FCAT. She was in honor classes. Honors English they read To Kill a Mockingbird which she read in the 7th grade so not sure how that would be an honor's class. Feel bad for the resource officer for this school. I hear about fights all of the time. Drug use in the bathrooms. Kids smoking E cigarettes in the hall and selling them also at school. Florida public school system for you. Principal has his hands full.

My daughter is a junior here and when she was a freshman we were so worried for her. There was no reason to worry. Yeah, this school is a big school but she loved it from day one and still does. She never complains about going to school each day and is part of the softball program. She loves her teachers and enjoys the classes she takes. The staff are wonderful and the principal is great too. I love the weekly phone calls to let us know what's coming up for the week. I also love his no nonsense approach to dealing with some of the issues that come up. Sure, you're going to have some kids who are problems but as long as your child stays away from the troublemakers, they will be fine. I have a child starting next year and I have no doubt he will enjoy it too.

We moved here from another state when my son was a Junior. We chose the neighborhood due to the great ratings Riverview High School has. We were so worried about him changing schools during high school. Little did we know it was the best thing for him! He loves the school, the faculty and even the principal. I never thought I would hear my son say that about faculty or administration! His grades have made a huge improvement due to the teachers truly caring about the students. Of course there are always some that are better than others about keeping the kids engaged but his certainly have! And as a parent, I have never been more informed about the happenings of the school than here! We are so happy that we chose this school!

I must say, this school is absolutely amazing! The teachers are great, the staff is helpful, the other students are friendly, nice, creative, etc. It's very easy to find new friends (as long as you're in some type of club or activity). Even though this school holds more than 2000 kids, it doesn't seem like it at all. Sure, it can get crowded sometimes, but it's something everybody gets used to. I'm going on to sophomore year now and I want to attend RVHS every year! :)

This school is a great school, and the main reason for that is the principal, Bob Heilman! Bob is truly a "hands-on" principal. He is friendly, helpful, and available to students and parents whenever they need him. Bob has been an educator for decades, and I can only hope and pray that he is still the principal of RVHS when my little ones move up to high school.
