The class sizes could be better. Also millions of dollars of state funding and school bonds coming in. The administration gets upgraded facilities with bells and whistles and my child is in a small portable isolated from the main school. The teachers seem good.

I have 2 children currently attending Union Ridge Elementary school. They are both excited about school and LOVE their teachers. I'm amazed at how well the teachers get to know my children and the time they spend with each of the students. We are very pleased with this school so far. I do have worries about the future of the school as ridgefield city continues to grow likely resulting in larger class sizes.

We've been in Ridgefield for six years and our daughter has been in Kindergarten and 1st Grade at Union Ridge. She has nothing but good things to say about school and I'm pleased with her academics and my interactions with her teachers.

We have a daughter that is finishing her second year at Union Ridge and we have had a very positive experience the last two years. The teachers we have worked with have had great communication skills and genuinely care about the students. We are always informed of happenings in the classrooms and at the school in a timely matter. There are lots of opportunitys for parents to get involved and volunteer in the class or with functions. Our daughter loves going to school everyday and has grown so much in the last two years especially with her math and reading skills.

We moved to Ridgefield excited/nervous about our new school. This is our first year in a traditional public school and I didn't know exactly what to expect. I have a 4th grader, 2nd grader and Kindergartener. We have been over-the-moon happy with the 4th grade teachers. This year there are 3 and they each take a specialty (reading, writing and math) so all 4th graders will spend at least some time with each of them. I was very nervous about this year for my son, who has always struggled academically. The teachers have been absolutely amazing with my son...he still struggles, but their encouraging attitude makes all the difference and he loves his new school! My daughter's teacher (2nd grade) has been good with communication, emailing me with concerns as they arise. However, Kindergarten has been a nightmare! My youngest son, who was so excited to start school, now hates it and cries regularly saying he wishes it was over. The curriculum is very fast-paced and (IMO) developmentally inappropriate. His teacher has been very discouraging and a disappointment to our family. If I didn't have the experience I have with the other teachers, I'd very much explore the idea of homeschooling.

The school has huge family involvement, many great teachers, sits in the heart of the community with beautiful parks, the library, the police station and city offices all within walking distance. They use a concept of self manager, where kids who consistently behave properly get the opportunity for special privileges like walking the halls alone and library time on their own. The self manager badge is a wonderful idea and only kids who regularly disregard rules lose it. (One mistake will not suffice.) The school is excelling in the state (winning awards) and what I like best about it is that there are rich, poor, smart, not so smart, athletic, artistic, special needs and all types at the school. A little lacking in ethnical diversity, but that's it. So you aren't overwhelmed by any one group--yet your child is exposed to life as it is--in the background of some really great teachers. The "new" principle is great too. No school is perfect, but this place rocks!

Where to start, at the beginning of the year it was an exciting time. We received a school menu that advertised fresh & local foods, that seemed to quickly turn to the standard delivery truck meals. Then, 3 months into the year, our daughter brought home a Contract she HAD to sign. The contract dealt with a program called "Self Manager" and these kids would receive special benefits for being "good". This ended up being a huge mistake, after about 2 months our daughters badge (which was required to stay in class) was taken, while at recess & when it was brought to the teacher she was told that it was her responsibility & would have to forfeit the opportunity to be a self manager for the rest of the year. Now I know when I am at work & I lose my "badge" I get a replacement not a lecture about how we are responsible for everything & then a permanent punishment. Our child is an over achiever and this was devastating for her to consider something she had no control over would follow her for the rest of the year. Her teacher took at least one day a week off through the whole year, yet if a child did that the parents would be in truancy court. This school is hypocrisy at it's finest.

When we moved to Ridgefield we were encouraged by many to submit a transfer request to South Ridge Elementary, which had better ratings. We decided to stick with Union Ridge and give it a try knowing that they had recently hired a new prinicpal. We have been very pleased with our experience so far. My daughter's teacher, Mrs. McDonald, is a wonderful teacher. I have volunteered in the classroom and have been impressed with her ability to handle a variety of behaviors and learning styles. While in the school all staff have been friendly and helpful towards me. This year they have reported great improvements in their test scores and their rating has increased. I am happy with our decision to send our children there.

Union Ridge has a few exceptional teachers, a few poor teachers, and many above-average teachers. Our counselor is the best. The school's Challenging academic programs are very limited because of limited funding. Our principal is retiring and we are hopeful that the new principal will be a strong advocate and leader. We have a few exceptional parents that volunteer continually, many that volunteer regularly, but just as many that complain a lot and do nothing. Parents could really kick it up by volunteering and helping out. School funding isn't available and people vote no on bonds...You Get What You Vote For and What You're Willing to Put Into It.

I can only say good things about this school and the staff they have been great with my children!! My son needed extra support and the school counselor has been wonderful in helping him with some things he's been struggling with. Thank you very much and a special thanks to Mr. Sunkel

I agree 100% with everything said. I feel most of the teachers are capable wonderful people who do care about their students. Same with school secretary, nurses and counselors. Everyone else seems to be all about teaching for the WASL or whatever it is now called. One of my children, has had trouble reading since K. Have tried everything to get help, but always hear there just aren't funds and there are kids who are worse. Have a H.S.. sophomore. A-B+ grades all high school. Running start test, reading 98, math, 38 (which is where a sophomore should be) and writing 22! How can an B+ student score a 22/100 on a college entrance exam writing section? Because teachers assign essays but students rarely have to edit them. Have a H.S.. senior who sits in classes that teach nothing most days. And calculators! 100% correct on that post!
