This is the private school for people who never expected to choose private school. It is so welcoming, warm, progressive, and low-key with actual racial and socioeconomic diversity. My son has flourished here and two weeks into summer break is already talking about when he can go back to school. He came to kindergarten feeling anxious and not completely comfortable socially and is now thriving in every way imaginable. The outdoor education is an amazing bonus. We love Good Shepherd so much.

GSES is such a wonderful school! We are beyond grateful to have found it.

My son has been at Good Shepherd for three years and we've been very happy. He has had made great friends in the small classes, and gets plenty of attention from the dedicated teaching staff. He also loves the "perks" like the outdoors program, where they walk over to nearby Forest Hill park and down by the James River to learn about nature and Richmond. We also like that, even though it's small, there kids from all kinds of different backgrounds, which was different from what we found in a lot of the other schools we looked at.

GSES is amazing! I can’t say enough positive things about the school.

In middle school my kid has a lot of assignments and projects in history and literature. It is very stressful I suggest not to go to this school if ur kid will get home late or if his/her weeks are very busy. I think these teachers are assigning so many projects because they don’t want to teach in class, some of them claim it will be a in class and out of class thing but in class they just stand there and ask what how ur projects are doing.

For such a small school, GSES offers many opportunities and extracurricular activities normally reserved for larger schools (visiting authors, yoga, mountain biking, lego robotics, etc.). Their strength seems to come in part from a few core staff/teachers that have ties within the community which in turn benefits the school. Equally, many of the staff have children that attend the school and there is an extraordinary amount of parental engagement. They have a vested interested in preserving some of pearls that make the school a success within the community and for the students (43rd Street Festival, Fawn Shop, theatre performances).

This is our third year at GSES and we love it! The headmaster is fabulous, the teachers wonderful and the chef prepared meals divine. Best kept secret in Richmond! Our daughter spent two miserable years in public school before we moved her here. She has blossomed in this environment. Best decision we ever made and the best money we ever spent. You owe it to your children to check this school out!

We have two children at Good Shepherd and are delighted with the school. Our kids have had an excellent experience academically, socially and personally and I see it in so many facets of their development. We really like the personalized experience and attention, as well as the teachers, staff and families which make up the community. Go GSES Rams!!

I love that this school makes education feel like a community effort! Also, there is on-site before and after school care that is a great option for working parents. Children can start school as early as 3 years old ... we have loved everything about our experience at GSES, and would recommend it without hesitation. Our son is so excited to begin his 4th year at the school!

This is our 5th year at GSES; we are holding a wait-&-see what happens attitude. Last year ended horribly. Academically, GSES is very good and almost individual learning environment has been excellent for our child. However, management changed last year, and the heavy handed style, along with personality clashes, indicated to us that perhaps what's best for the students is not what comes first. It was too late to move our child for this school year.
