Over the last two years my children have attended here we have had a multitude of issues. We have witnessed moldy food be given to our children. This was found in a juice that was sent home. The milk they serve has sometimes been spoiled. This year while still trying to protect people from COVID they can't get my kids to school on time. Their bus often times arrives to the bus stop 30 to 40 min late everyday. If you attempt to drive your children to school they do not want you to get out of your car and they will open the car door and unbuckle your children from their car seats as well as try to move your seats in your. They say it's for safety but I don't know who they are protecting. The parent from getting hit by a car or trying to limit the spread of germs. All the while they are touching everyone's vehicles without sanitizing their hands before touching each car. If you are able to find a place to live out side of this school district I would. This is the 5th state my kids have attended school and this is by far the worst school in regards to communication and level of education I have seen this far.

In my opinion this school has gone way down hill in the past 5-8 years but this 20-21 school year I have seen a drastic positive change in my child who has made massive improvement and a much more positive outlook on her education. Fingers crossed this continues when a normal school curriculum resurfaces.

If there were negative numbers we would be to the far left! There are a few good teachers here don't get me wrong. But the administration and overall student population make this school unsafe! I have emails and notes where a student threatened to kill my child(2 different students in one school year) they both got a 5 day suspension and that is it! After pulling my child to homeschool I later found the same students returned and continued the same behavior! It's unacceptable! They do not care about getting to the root of problems and implementing a plan to prevent things in the future! Also, school events are very unorganized! We had a line out into the rd with parents waiting to pick up thier students after a dance. We were all under the impression it would be ran like car rider line because the sheet nor the automated calls pertaining to the dance said otherwise. After several parents started walking toward the school they found several teachers standing there with all the students in different rooms. The parents told them no one knew to get out and come get their child so the teachers asked this parent to inform the others on their way out! None of them had clipboards or any documentation on who was allowed to pick up students and who wasn't! Parent involvement is very little at this school. I tried getting info on PTO several times with no response. We came from an excellent school district im GA with parent nights and continuous events for students to a school who does minimal! It's sad. Lastly, I've asked several Raeford natives what they know about Scurlock and all of them had the same response, "Do not send your child there! It's a bad area and the worst school we have!" I didn't take their advice initially and gave it a try, DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!

Terrible administration and even worse at the level above them. The teachers do their best but the people in charge won't take the necessary steps to help make the school better.

Great for 1 child HORRIBLE for my other child. My kindergartener is doing amazing his teacher is great she sets up conferences when she is concerned about something, he is reading wonderfully he genuinely enjoys school.... now with that being said my first grader has had a completely different experience! He started the year excited and ready to go after about a week that changed to crying and begging me not to drop him off saying his teacher was mean and yelled I brushed it off for a weeks thinking ok its just a new school he will get used to it and when he started falling behind and struggling with things I knew he understood I called the school after many failed attempts of trying to get my call returned or being told my the women at the front desk that maybe I should just get over it pretty much he will be fine I went to the school board. Now since that I haven't had any issues with my son saying she is mean and embarrasses him but he went from a bright bubbly eager to learn student to falling behind and now is on the verge of failing the first grade! I am paying for outside tutoring because I feel like he is not getting the help he needs in the classroom he constantly comes home with incomplete work and when I ask why he responds well she tells me to keep up and I cant so I do what I can... he's in first grade!!! I never once had an issue with him falling behind in K he was actually was above the rest of the class average. This school has ruined my child's spirit to learn in first grade. Stay far away if possible they have some amazing teachers but the bad apples ruin it, its not worth the chance if getting one!

I previously gave the school a 4 star rating and up until this year, my experience was great - with the exception of a single incident last year. However, I feel that I must now rescind this rating following this past year. This year has been HORRIBLE! I have tried to repeatedly address concerns and issues resulting in no resolution. My daughter used to have an excited passion for school and couldn’t wait to show me the homework she had completed. I have watched her grades slowly drop throughout the year, her desire to complete homework disintegrate, and her enjoyment of learning disappear. She HATES school now. She has begged me to move her to another school. She is bullied and targeted by other students. I am not saying my child is perfect; all children have room for improvement, but when students stop her on the way to class and berate her in front of her grandmother; it is easy to see why she has no desire to go to school anymore. A child exposed himself to her last year and the school (and district’s) response was minimal. This The administration left that child in her class saying that the only option was to move her even though he was the one who committed the act. I was to pull her from the teacher she loved because another student crossed the line. There was minimal ramification for the student, while my daughter was forced to be in the same class as that student every day and the teacher forced to have to ensure they did not come in contact with each other at any point. This year has disappointed me to an entirely different level. My daughter’s attitude and behavior have changed completely. Her grades dropped. Her interaction with others decreased. While she has had pleasant moments scattered throughout the year, they no longer make up for the continued frustrations she faces daily. It is unfortunate that the awesome teachers here don't have the support of the administration to ensure their classrooms are an environment for growth and success. I have watched my daughter begin to suffer from depression and have to start seeing a counselor as a result of this school and the lack of willingness to help from the administration. The repeated avoidance of the administration to do anything to protect this student in their care is appalling. As a result the student is now the one that is suffering and the administration could care less!

My daughter is in Kindergarten in Mrs. Baca's class. She gives a great amount of homework which I love. At only 5yrs old my daughter knows the developmental stages of butterflies and frogs. She knows the names of the planet. She is an awesome speller. Her teacher uses an app so I can check my child's every day performance. The teacher communicates very well. She also wants her students to be advance and well prepared for first grade. I may not care much for that neighborhood but the school is great. I've never had an issue dealing with anything.

We we're a little concerned at first but fell I. Love fairly quickly after we started here at Scurlock the PTO,teachers and staff are welcoming and are really there for the right reason. It's not about location or the looks at that school they really devote their love for the kids and educating them.

The area around the school is a poor area and the school is older, but we absolutely love the school! The teachers are nice and are good at communicating with the parents, and they have the child's interest at heart! My child and I love Scurlock!

We love the open campus feel along with the beautifully decorated courtyard this school has. Lots of natural sunlight versus the windowless modern schools. This school is located in a less-affluent area but don't let this discount your opinion! The teachers and staff are kind, caring and knowledgeable. If given the opportunity, we would NOT change from this school.

My daughter is a third grader at Scurlock and we love it. At first I wasn't sure about the school because I read lots of bad reviews on this site but I'm happy we gave it a chance. Since Pre K my daughters teachers have all been great. The communication between the school and parents is great. The PTO is great and they put together lots of activities for the kids throughout the year.

I am proud to say my children have had the best teachers while at this amazing learning institution. The school should be giving more funds so the children as well as the teachers get the equipment they need in their class rooms. This is a school of technology, let's treat it as such. Our kids deserve the best!!!

Looks can be deceiving, so please don't judge this school based off how it looks. I did in the beginning. I can honestly say I'm glad my husband and I gave the school a chance. We love the school. The teachers are great, and our daughter is advancing better than I expected based off her scores and progress reports. The rating needs to be updated. I wouldn't give it a 2 out of 10. More of a 7 out of 10. If the school received more funds rather than placing majority of those funds in newer schools, it might have a better rating. It needs more, but the teachers use what they have and do a great job.

My daughters attend this school and the teachers and staff are amazing. My third grader had major issues with reading and her teachers have gotten her to where she needs to be and she is now more confident in herself.

Scurlock is a great school with a great staff. They are the most hardworking people I know. The school has a great positive environment. The best school in Hoke County!

Scurlock Elementary School is a school that knows how to to work exceptionally well with students and they expand on methods to do more with less. Don't be fooled by the outside, or the location, because all students at Scurlock are loved, taught with excellence and achievement in mind and all of their students show growth every year. Scurlock Elementary School prides itself on providing a positive, engaging, and loving teaching environment that reaches EVERY CHILD. For those of you that have posted negative comments about Scurlock, I suggest you spend some real time with the faculty, staff and students before you judge them. Scurlock Elementary School is a wonderful school with dedicated and caring teachers that go infinitely beyond the realms of their jobs to teach children. They spend countless hours after school, at home and during their personal time to work for their children. Scurlock teachers spend their own personal funds to supply students with the tools they need to succeed and thrive. I have seen and witnessed this kind of dedication many many times. Scurlock Elementary School loves our kids and we should show more support to them.

Did you hear the news? The Hoke County Commissioners gave the school board money for renovations at Scurlock! The cafeteria and cafeteria restrooms are almost finished! There's new windows and air conditions being installed, too. The Bear Campus is going to look so good after all of updates. Thank you, Hoke County Commissioners, for what you have given to our students, their families, and the Scurlock staff!

As a parent of a child at Scurlock I have had so many amazing experiences watching my child grow as a Bear. Yes the school is older, yes the layout seems concerning, but but the teachers and staff give 100% of themselves to the students at Scurlock. Any time I have had an issue or concern it had been addressed quickly and efficiently. School events are fun, educational and engaging. I am proud to have my daughter at Scurlock.

Hoke County has Scurlock Elementary School in its district. This is the worst school I have ever seen. Having been across the US and overseas, I have never witnessed a school that gives it student all A's and B's then says that the student will be retained in the 3rd grade due to a test. The school was asked in the beginning of the 2013/14 school yr to test the student for reading problems but the teacher and principal both said it was not their responsibility. When parent had testing done, school refused to acknowledge the disability (Irlen Syndrome). Look it up, it is real but my grandson now is told he must redo 3rd grade because plans were already in motion for him to leave the state the day school got out. I would never recommend anyone move into this school district.

I would rate this school a zero if I had the opportunity. The location is more than scary, the teachers are a joke with very few exceptions, and the principal does not take concerns seriously and talks about other parents which I find to be very unprofessional. The school board is equally dismissive and will not try to help you at all. I cannot wait to move out of this county! Please do not send your kids to this school. If you don't believe the low reviews just look at the test scores...
