I've got one child at Quincy-Pioneer Elementary and one at Plumas Charter School. The Charter School is not for every kid...but it's a great fit our child that is currently there. Yes, the parent(s) needs to be more involved in the independent study program for it to be successful...but that's what we were expecting anyway! Lack of participation by the parent(s) will be evident in almost any student, regardless of what school they attend. I love the fact that we have options here in Quincy!!!

I am writing about Indian Valley Academy (IVA), a division of Plumas Charter School which shares a unique partnership with Plumas Unified School District's Greenville Junior-Senior High School (GHS). IVA is able to provide a rigorous academic program for it's grade 7th -12th graders while offering electives to the students of both schools that could not be offered by GHS alone. This partnership also allows IVA students to participate in sports and band classes at GHS which has proven to be a huge benefit to both schools. IVA sets high academic and behavior standards and is able to offer advanced academic classes, project based learning and an individual educational program for every student. For it's students who pass college administered readiness exams, they may enroll in up to three college classes each semester. Principal, retired secretary for Mother Teresa, Sue Weber, has brought her energy and her wealth of experience with underserved children to IVA and it's rural mountain community in Northeastern California. This grant would allow IVA to purchase art, music and other materials for it's many unique offerings to the students of Indian Valley.

We have been very pleased with the Charter School. Our children are thriving in that environment. They have academic as well as arts on the days that they go to class (2 days a week). They love their teachers and the principal. It feels like a village. They learn pottery, music, Spanish and play with other children their age, while benefiting from the one on one attention they get from home school.

I had my child in this school and pulled them out and back at the local high school. Independent study is not the way to go and I found out quickly my son was waking up late in the morning, working a few hours and then watching TV and playing video games the rest of the time. He stopped talking with his friends and stopped playing sports. He was becoming very lazy. I also learned a valuable lesson that computers are no substitute for a qualified teacher. He is now behind in math and writing and is now at Greenville High School where he is getting the help he needs. Don't be fooled by independent study. It is not for everyone.
