Fantastic culture. Very strong PTA. Citywide G&T with above average IEPs. Exceptional Middle School Debate and Elementary School Chess program. Teacher turnover of some concern, but replacements are strong.

It is truly a great school with wonderful teachers. The principal is supportive and communicative. My daughter’s math teacher Ms. Anna is not only very professional, but also nice, caring and supportive. She just knows how to deal with teenage girls. Her computer science teacher Scott is wonderful too. He is very understanding and supportive. He knows how to keep his students engaged in his class and encourage them to become better. There are many other great teachers at Q300. I want to take this opportunity to thank the school and all the teachers for their hard work. Daughter just graduated this month and is going to Stuyvesant high school. I’m very proud of her.

Have a daughter in Kindergarten and she is super excited to go to school. Ms Park, her teacher, seems to be very supportive, provides great feedback to the parents, and genuinely tries to help her students progress academically and emotionally. There is a lot of stress made on kids to be kind and respectful to each other and others around them, to use words not to hurt, and to learn about each other's differences, cultures, languages. Overall, we are very pleased with the school and our daughter's teachers. Our daughter is very happy to go to school in the mornings and returns full of positive energy.

We have a first grader who has been at Q300 for two years and our experience has been extremely positive thus far. What I value most about the school is that the academics are rigorous but the approach is creative and individualized--instead of learning by rote or doing worksheets and drills, the kids are given open-ended and imaginative assignments, with lots of team and project-based work. There's also a serious emphasis on social emotional development and we have noticed a real difference in our daughter's confidence and problem-solving skills. Her teacher sends thorough emails at least weekly describing what the kids are learning and we have many opportunities to visit the classroom and get more involved. The PTA also does a lot to build community (always a challenge for a citywide school) and raises money for TAs and enrichments like music and architecture. All in all, we've been very pleased.

I'm the parent of a student from the first graduating class of Q300. At this point, there is only one class of about 27 students graduating, but almost 70% made it into a specialized high school! I attribute the success to the inquiry-style learning environment fostered in the school. These students love learning and are enriched by each other, as they are encouraged to discuss what they know in the classroom. This environment pushes them to be the best they can be. They are competitive, but in a positive way.

I would like to echo other parents' positive perceptions of Q300. I believe Q300 is a fabulous school that does a great job in balancing academics and social/emotional well-being. Each year the school continues to grow and will be a full K-8 school in 2 years. The principal is very committed to continuing the success of the school and is accessible to parents.My child's K teacher has been very responsive to any concerns that I have. She takes the time to answer emails in a timely manner and takes the time to answer my questions and concerns during the Parent Teacher conferences. There are many opportunities for volunteering in the class and school. The PTA is unbelievably active and committed to ensuring that a wide variety of enrichments and TA support are provided to the students. Enrichments for K include a semester of visual arts taught by Art House Astoria, year-long music (based on the Orff method of music and movement) by the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, year-long Spanish twice a week, a semester of mindfulness class taught by an outside teacher who incorporates yoga and other activities, and year-long computer technology twice a week. There is an explorations room filled with blocks and Legos for children to freely explore in K and other lower classes. Each kindergarten class has a full-time teaching assistant funded by the PTA. Monthly PTA meetings are well attended by both parents and teachers/school administration. Recently, there are monthly Friday morning coffee hours coordinated by the committed parent coordinator, where families can meet in a small group, intimate setting with the principal and discuss issues with him. The principal also sends out detailed weekly email messages to parents about what's going on in the school.Although the school is not as well funded as Nest+m or Anderson (in terms of PTA funding, since Q300 is a relatively small school) and is not as established as these two citywide gifted and talented schools, I have no doubt that it will grow to be just as strong and highly coveted by prospective families in a short time. The school draws students from mostly Queens, although quite a large number of students commute from Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Bronx. I really think that if you live in Queens, it's a no-brainer to choose Q300 vs. other citywide G & T schools given its many strengths and proximity to home.

We have been very happy with Q300. My son is in first grade and his teacher is an absolute gem. We get regular updates on his work and she's always available via email and phone with any questions. I feel that the work he's doing is challenging him, but it's been done in a manner that ensures he's not overwhelmed. I feel very lucky we're in this school community.

We are very pleased with the school. Our child's teacher is always very responsive to any questions we have. The PTA raises money for TAs for the lower grades and other enrichments including music, art, mindfulness etc. I like the emphasis on inquiry and de-emphasis on homework (not required until 3rd grade). Q300 has been the perfect fit for my child and his younger sibling will be joining him next year.

I understand there was a change in the administration last year and there may be some parents still adjusting. I am also aware that different people bring in different management styles so no doubt I will not expect the new administration to lead the school exactly the same way as the previous principal did. This is to say, we as parents have to work with the principal every step of the way. Principal Bill, as the other parent stated, hosts regular meetings, talks, and greets the students upon arrival every morning at gate and at dismissal in the school courtyard. Should you have any concerns or suggestions you can easily reach out to him then. I can't be more appreciative to this school after learning many community moms complained about how their children's teachers don't respond or reluctant to address their individual concerns. I've found it absolutely opposite at Q300. My child's teachers are all very attentive, nurturing, and they always address to my concerns within an hour if not two hours after I send them an email. They watch over my son's asthmatic needs and are in constant conversations with me in regards to his intellectual needs and progress in school. The school promotes inclusion where the kids are taught different languages to greet each other every morning, as a practice to appreciate each other's cultures and differences. Teachers also teach kids how to solve conflicts by brainstorming ways to problem solve and role play. It's a place where I feel safe to leave my son to. I am glad to see that he's academically challenged and his emotional well-beings are also well taken care of. In terms of the school's homework policy homework is not mandated to return until 3rd grade. I really appreciate the new administration honors this practice because parents are given options to provide their children other enrichment activities depending on their day and needs, which, in my household, very often leads to mini research. To sum up, I am very happy with the school and am looking forward to continuing working with the new administration.

This school is truly excellent, with an administration that is receptive to parental input and criticism. In response to a review below, I would like to point out that the principal communicates regularly with parents via email (through a weekly update) and by holding a monthly meeting where any parents can sign up and have their voices heard. Some parents, sadly, are PITAs to deal with. They think if the principal doesn't run the school their way, that leadership is lacking. What these demanding parents fail to realize is that the leadership of the school must meet the needs of ALL its students, and not just individual children. The current administration has been beyond patient when dealing with a small group of vocal, but unreasonably demanding, parents.

While the teachers are invested in the children's learning and well-being, the administration for the lower grades is very disorganized and communicates poorly with its community members. When the leaders of this school behave in this way, it has a negative impact on the teachers, students and the community as a whole.

This is a small school, yet with an extraordinary community as a support system for the children. The principal is deeply caring, communicates with parents regularly, knows each student's name and greets them every morning. The teachers do not enforce homeworks, encourage group thinking and develop their own curriculum based on student needs. It is an egalitarian setup with mutual respect, and one which provides a safe space. They even have excellent afterschool programs. Couldn't be happier sending my daughter there. (Updated on Oct 12, 2016)It is a new school, but the principal and the teachers are very much involved and inspired to make the school perform per the level of expectations one has from citywide G/T programs. They offer Chess after school as well as various instruments. Parental engagement with the school is very high and the teaching curricula are unique. (April 2, 2016)

Note this is a K-8 school for gifted and talented students started in 2014. In 2015, it has K,1,2,6,7. Two grades are added each year. School is warm and welcoming.

The 30th Avenue School is a very nurturing environment. The school is in its first year and the teachers are extremely dedicated, as well as the Principal. As a citywide G&T school, many of the families are commuting from other parts of Queens, as well as the Bronx and Manhattan, so it is get the community together, but there is a great deal of parent involvement. The children are happy, the environment is warm and friendly and they love their teachers.
