This school is probably the best elementary school in Queens. My son learned a lot and the Principal is great.

I love this school. The staff is excellent with teaching the kids and showing they care. When I walk into the school it feels like you walking into a family member home. They always greet the parents with a smile .

We have been in the school since K 2017-2018. The whole year was phenomenal, great and unexpected experiences, pleasantly surprised by the performing arts program, and extra curriculars. They bring in dance companies like Dance Theater of Harlem and Alvin Ailey to teach kids and they put great shows. They offer Dance, Drama/Library, Art, Music, Technology. They have a lot of arts programs that no other school around has. The staff and teachers are amazing. This year 2018-2019 we are in first grade, things are a bit different. They were offering lunch dance and music clubs, twice a week for each of these. The dance classes/clubs made it so they had Dance 4 times a week in some form or another: the regular dance class, the Alvin Ailey residency, the twice a week dance club. The music club was supposed to teach the kids the recorder this year. Somehow that has been taken away a month into the year. The dance club was reduced to once a week. The gym teacher left and the remaining Health Teacher has to cover the whole school gym and health education. I never hear anything about gym from my kid. Funding issue? Even so, this school has a lot to offer and budgets and bureaucracy get the best of everyone everywhere, especially when we are talking about the DOE. The school does its best, but it feels like teachers need more support. All the staff are caring and loving, the Principal knows everybody by name, which is amazing to see at morning drop off. The PTA is great, they raise a lot of funds for even more extra curriculars, such as Asphalt Green, Bio Bus

I've only had positive experiences at PS234. The staff really care about the students. They bring enthusiasm and fun ideas in to the classroom. There are a lot of extra-curricular activities during the school day such as chess and singing clubs during lunch time. Only real downside in no afterschool program for the whole school (it's limited to the higher grades) but this comes down to a space issue. The performances are always phenomenal. And this year the school received grants to upgrade the auditorium and create a brand new dance studio! Test scores aren't great but I believe that is due to a lot of non-English speakers in the school. The school is very diverse and welcomes everyone. The PTA is very active and holds lots of events for all the students and families. Looking forward to my toddler joining the school eventually to join her big brother!

I have to disagree with a lot of the comments posted here. I have had 2 kids in PS 234. One just moved on to middle school and one in 2nd grade. My oldest was in kindergarten when the school was run by the previous principal and the experience was truly disappointing and frustrating. The school at that time was the epitome of mediocracy, not what it is now. The amount of change that has happened at this school since the new principal Ms. Danner took over has been amazing. She has only been here for 2 years and has brought back gym, music and art. She has brightened the environment in so many ways. Her and her team have brought parents back into the infrastructure when before we were pushed out. She has brought so many programs into to this school it blows my mind. I have watched the children who attend this school grow into outgoing, confident and well spoken little people when before they were meek, underwhelmed and bored. The education in NYC and Queens will always be what it will be. But when you work to create a happy world with exposure to arts and sciences and appreciation for all cultures you begin to create something special. That is happening in this school. It is still early, but I have faith that Ms. Danner and her administration will continue to grow this special place into one of the most sought after schools in the city. This can only be successful if parents continue to support the school and PTA and get involved rather than criticize and nitpick. The school is not yet perfect, but they are on their way.

This school is an epitome of mediocracy. Great facilities that are underutilized and teachers that strive to do bare minimum when it comes to academic achievements. I was hopeful hearing about the arts program, but so far haven't seen anything impressive, but rather subpar efforts to just register activity for funding. Bright kids are bored, and ultimately forced to go down to the lower expectations and level of achievement that won't make the kids at the bottom feel bad. No after school programs, and overzealous PTA consisting of stay at home self-centered bored moms. Too bad, this school that is located at the heart of Astoria, where a lot of young families with a hope of giving a strong start to their kids' education, has to disappoint so bad.

I have three children of which one remains in 234. My second one just graduated from there. We are lucky to be zoned for this school. The school is well run. From the principal to the office people to security to the teachers, everyone is always trying to help the children in every way possible. There are always special family nights and the staff volunteers. The kids are given a lot of practice so they can do good on their tests. Teachers work hard to get their students to do better. The administration is always buying the newest things for the teachers to teach and for the kids to work with. Thank you 234 for helping my children so much.

Great school, amazing building, very nice teachers and staff. The parent coordinator is helpful and organized. The Counselor is one of a kind person, really caring, really sweet and dedicated to the children she sees. There is a sense of "home" inside the school, where everyone feels as if they are really a part of a family. I would suggest that the parents work deeper in getting themselves more involved with the school. There is always room for improvement, but i am happy that my child has had these people in her life, after having such a hard time with violent behavior in another school. At PS 234 violence is not accepted at all.
