I live in this neighborhood and I have been watching this school over the past ten years it has been here. I have spoken with neighbors who have had kids enrolled there. It started of poorly, with low academic standards, and unskilled administrators. However, in these last couple of years, I'm seeing changes. There seems to be a higher quality of student. My biggest observation of change and improvement, came while I was attending a recent Phoenix College graduation. I overheard two girls introducing themselves as Phoenix College Prep students and saying that they were getting their associate's degree from the college and their high school diploma within that same week. It really makes me think that good things are happening at this school. Uptown Phoenix needs this kind of school improvement.

The school may have been (somewhat) what the comments with low stars say, but it really has turned around in the 4 years that I went there (2009-2013). The teachers are great if you have any problem, be it personal or school related they will help you if it will make you a better person/student. The low student to teacher ratio (roughly 12:1) made everyone feel welcome and feel like family (My graduating class had 10 students and we supported each other through everything in those 4 years). The comment about 1-2 college classes is no longer true, my senior year I took nothing but college classes at Phoenix College, paid by the school. I am proud to say I went to PCPA, and even more proud to say that they (and ACE) paid for my entire Associates Degree (AA). I only paid for notebooks and pencils, my calculator and computer access was provided by the school. (I paid for one class but only because I graduated in May and needed one last math class to receive my (AA)). Overall I am very happy with my experience at Phoenix College Preparatory Academy and recommend it to anyone that really wants to get a head start on everyone in their age group. -Annabell Benton Class of 2013

I am the new principal at Phoenix College Preparatory Academy and I'm sad to say that these comments were probably accurate in the past. I can assure you that things have changed and will continue to change. We are a college prep high school and I expect our students to be serious about school and to obey school rules. I agree that we have good teachers and they are now in control of the way they teach their classes and the grades they give our students. We have already undergone quite a few changes and we will continue to evolve until we become the school that Phoenix College intended for us to be. We will recruit serious students who wish to attend a college prep high school with an opportunity to enroll in college classes and earn both college and high school credit. We will adjust our bell schedule so our students have a better opportunity to take more college classes. I fully expect some of our more diligent students to be able to complete their Associates Degree by the time they graduate high school and for those that don't, to have a significant number of college credits when they graduate. We will begin having all of our students take the Acuplacer college entrance exam for placement in college classes. This is the same exam that all college students must take. Phoenix College Preparatory Academy is not designed for credit recovery although that may have been function in the past. We will build our master schedule with the goal of all students passing classes and moving to the next level. We will continue to provide assistance to our students in an effort to ensure they understand the material and pass their classes. We not only expect our students to do well in their classes but to pass all state mandated testing and graduate on time. My goal is that at least 80 percent will continue on in some type of post-secondary education after they leave PCPA. Robert Asadi Principal

I was very happy with the teaching staff, they are true teachers and care about the education of the students. On the other hand the office and principle are completely ridiculous. I have never seen a school run by such an ineffectual management staff. My child can go to the office on a whim, there are no mandates to keep the children under control. When my child thinks the teacher is working her too hard the office staff allows her to come in and they do her work for her. When asked about it they told me their teachers are not good teachers and the office needs to do the teaching. As far as I can see the office is staffed by business management personnel, not teaching staff. I have found the teaching staff to be excellent. Please rethink enrolling your child here, I am pulling mine out. I did not enroll her to run the school and let the office help do her work for her just so she can pass a class. One more thing, when the teachers who were working with my child were brought into the office to discuss the situation with me the principle and some woman from the office belittled the teachers and basically blamed all problems on their lousy teaching skills. What is going on here?

Our freshman year at this school was a total success. My son loved going here from the first day to the last day and is looking forward to the next three years. The diversity of going to high school classes, while at the same time taking a college class was the winning ticket to keeping him from getting bored with school. He looked forward to going every day. The students couldn't of been more welcoming in making him feel accepted and liked for who he is. All the teachers & staff are excellent at what they do, it shows by how easily I & the student body can relate to them daily. I never felt like a number and was shown individual attention 100% of the time. This is a great high school! Both my son & I will come away, at the end of four years, with wonderful experiences and memories. Thank you Teacher Prep! ( you are a mother's best resource in education.)

This school is horrible!!! They are failing the students miserably! Most of the kids that attend come from very low income house holds in bad neighborhoods. School is the last thing on these kids minds and it shows. The staff hide behind the saying that it is a "self motivated school" but what they mean is we realize most of the students don't care to learn and its too much effort to try to make them. There are few rules, zero expectations, and if your lucky the kids MIGHT attend 2 college classes in a YEAR! They make it seem like that is the focus but it is NOT! If you are concerned about safety or education which there is neither of, DO NOT ATTEND!
