My daughter attended this school for a few months and I had to pull her out because she was experiencing bullying, the school made her feel as if she was the problem and had her get help rather than disciplining the other children who were bullying. If you child is colored or even mixed, stay far from this school, they do not practice inclusiveness and do not celebrate black history month.

We are very happy with the approach the elementary school makes with regards to academics, curriculum, and policies. The focus is on learning and growing. There are plenty of after school activities. The parents are great. It is a great learning community!

We moved out of the public in-district school because the learning style was very out dated. The concern in the public district schools seems to be focusing only on making sure students who are behind the average for grade level get all of the attention. Students who are performing at level or above level seem to be forgotten. Not at Horizon! All students are challenged and taught at their appropriate level. I love this individualized learning! Additionally, the community is so welcoming, it is very friendly and ALL of the staff seems involved and genuinely interested in ALL students! Teachers and staff here have a feeling of truly loving what they do! My child isn't lost in the shuffle, but instead, is a part of a school community!

Amazing! Love their approach to student learning and development - through goal planning, the teaching methods, and placing kids where they will be challenged appropriately. There is a strong focus on leadership and good stewardship. I have always felt that there is really good communication from the administration and the teachers - through weekly updates/newlsetters as well as text and email blasts when there is something more timely/pressing school-wide.

This school is amazing! In our area you really can’t go wrong. All the schools are 10’s. But at Horizon the parents are move actively involved the kids are expected to dress a certain way. The kids act more like kids then the public school kiddos. It comes down to a whole different culture of learning at Horizon that the public schools just do not have.

We have attended since kindergarten and are now entering 4th grade. There is a serious lack of communication to the parents from both the teachers and the administration. They have a frequent teacher turnover and I think that is because the teachers are unhappy at Horizon, unhappy teachers equals unhappy kids. I feel that my child is very much behind her peers that attend other schools.

We love our extended family at Horizon Honors. We have a wide range of ability levels in our home ranging from previous Sped student to extremely gifted student and without a doubt, Horizon has met and exceeded anything we could have hoped for our kids education thus far. The teachers genuinely love to teach and staff is very friendly and warm. We could not speak more highly of Horizon Honors and our experience there. Beyond blessed to have found a school that not only challenges kids academically but also is challenging the "norm" of the school environment. It truly is a family from K-12 with their inclusive Big Morning Meetings and Pep Rally's. My kiddos love it there and so do I!

We've had a phenomenal experience at Horizon. The school is a true community - caring teachers, involved parents, and amazing students! The teachers at all levels know my children, encourage my children, and support my children's success. My children feels safe, secure, and cared for at Horizon. The academic opportunities are plentiful, as our the after school clubs and activities. We are thrilled to be a Horizon family!

We have two kids at Horizon, and they've both been there since Kinder. It's a closer community than anything I would have imagined. Small group teaching atmosphere works great for my kids, and they love the project groups. Kids get to work on many different topics hands on, and are extremely proud of their work during Summative nights. The school is amazing for kids with higher academic abilities, teachers do a great job pushing the kids to their capabilities, pushing them into higher levels. In addition to academic success, one of the biggest reasons I love Horizon is the additional Clubs that are offered to kids. For any student that loves performing arts, Horizon offers more than I've seen at most schools. Drama Club starts at first grade, and 'junior choir' at 3rd grade. The performances we've seen by the older groups have been amazing. There is also Save the Earth Club where kids learn the importance of recycling, keeping the world clean, and even growing their own plants. Grub Club is also a favorite, both my kids have actually learned to make different food items at Grub Club, and came home and wanted to make them on their own. The teachers make it so exciting that they've been able to get my kids to try and like vegetables me and my husband have been working on for years... Horizon is a No Place for Hate and Mix It Up school, too. We love that aspect, because having kids with dual nationalities, we always want our kids to be accepting of everyone, and Horizon fosters that very well. Administration is also very open to feedback. Parents are very involved, and I love the new family we've built at Horizon.

For my kids, Horizon is a great fit. My 9th and 5th graders have both been at Horizon since Pre-K, and are thriving. I believe that this is because Horizon does not teach "to the test" so to speak, but fosters in the kids a love for learning and achieving. At Horizon, kids are assessed and challenged by work that is appropriate to their abilities; they are challenged to work in learning teams to solve problems, so have to master not only the material, but also develop interpersonal skills that will serve them in the real world. Horizon kids have lots of opportunities to develop and utilize leadership and public speaking skills. Horizon is strong in academics, but also offers many opportunities for the arts through Art Masterpiece, band and choir electives and clubs; and physical exercise through daily PE, clubs, and Intramural sports. Finally, Horizon truly feels like a community, with lots of parent involvement and strong guiding values: Learn, Believe, Dream, Dare!

We have been at Horizon for 9 years. My daughters transitioned from a local Montessori at 1st and 5th grades. Right now, one is a sophomore at NAU (on a full merit scholarship) and the other a 10th grader at Horizon Honors High School. We have been very happy here at Horizon. As a parent, I am so happy to walk in the office and have the office staff know who I am, and know who my children are. They encourage parental involvement from elementary all the way through high school. During their time in elementary, they were given the opportunities to have music and PE daily. They developed friendships and were taught how to prioritize, work in groups, problem solve and speak in front of an assembly of their peers. Both participated in student government and were selected as student ambassadors. The student ambassadors give the new families tours of the school. I remember how impressed I was when we first toured Horizon and how articulate the students were. My children have participated in the choir and performing arts departments, and this year, my 10th grader decided to give team sports a try. While she had never been in sports before, she was encouraged to sign up and give it her best. And she did! Her team mates and coaches were very welcoming. As a family, we have really enjoyed participating in the various sporting events to cheer the teams on. Our varsity teams rival many other schools and we have several students who have received sports scholarships to college. My older daughter felt the curriculum challenged her and kept her interested. She was rewarded by receiving multiple scholarships and is now attending NAU with a full tuition merit scholarship. I have always found the teachers open to listening about my concerns and very open to my advice on how best to work with my children. As parents, we are encouraged to have open communication with the teachers and have scheduled conferences 5 times a year (more if necessary). When reaching out to any of the staff, I can usually get in to see them with in a day or two. While Horizon is a “small community”, they are encouraged to be big thinkers. The students are help each other and there really isn’t any bullying. Both my daughters found themselves to be mentors to not only their peers, but the younger students in the elementary school as well.If you want a “small school environment” were each student is valued and listened to, Horizon really is the place for your family.

We highly value education. My wife has a PhD and I am an attorney. We spent a large amount of time deciding on the elementary school for our children, now 8 (second grade) and 10 years old (fifth grade). Horizon Honors is the perfect fit. Both kids started in Kindergarten. What attracted us academically were two key features: (1) Horizon’s student-to-teach ratio, and (2) the fact that students are assessed and taught at their level. It was not uncommon for an advanced Kindergartener to start in first or second grade math or reading, etc. Similarly, students needing more help are not left behind, but are engaged and taught at the right level of challenge. Every student receives an individualized learning plan (ILP).Kindergarten classrooms are typically 25-30 students. Each classroom has a fulltime teacher and adult assistant teacher/teacher aid, resulting in a teacher-to-student ratio of about 13-15. In grades 1-6, students are in mixed-aged classrooms (again, taking into account the challenge needed for each student), with a class size of 55-60. These classrooms are led by 3 adults–two teachers and an adult assistant teacher/teacher aid, yielding a student/teacher ratio of 18-20. These numbers are phenomenal. Beyond the numbers, the teachers are excellent–caring, committed, experienced. We’ve become big fans.Beyond the classroom, I appreciate the lunch options. Food is catered from Pei Wei, Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, Boston Market, etc., making it much better than cafeteria-level food. Involvement opportunities are larger and more diverse–numerous sports, clubs, and activities are available to K-6 students. Our kids have been involved in Melody Makers, Code Bots, Rising Stars, Save the Earth, Showbiz, Lego Club, Art Club, and our fifth grader was selected to one of the middle school sports teams. We have also seen continued improvement. When issues or concerns have arisen, the school is agile enough to make changes because the entirety of the administration resides on premises. When parking was a problem, the school addressed it with partnerships to provide new and expanded parking. The school’s leadership is responsive and engaged.Finally, Horizon builds community. My kids see classmates all over town, and because of the large amount of parent participation and involvement, the families also get to know each other and build community.
