As a minority we love the school! I have never heard from my kid that he does not want to go to school and we have been going to Carpenter since kindergarten and now we are in the 2d grade. My kid made so many friends there and teachers are great. My kid barely new English when he started the Kindergarden and he got so much help from the school in improving the language. We as a parents also happy with the staff being responsive to questions and concerns. Never faced billing or anything like that.

Carpenter was an absolute nightmare for our child, and we are so happy we left, about a year ago. The kids were incredibly racist and our child got severely bullied, both emotionally and physically, developing anger issues, depression, and a mean attitude over the 2 years he was there. It took a year of therapy and time at a more welcoming and diverse school for him to recover and return to the happy, kind person he used to be. It was only after this recovery that he opened up about all the awful things they used to do to him - pitting him up against other minority children and making them say who was worse, dumber, etc between themselves and their close friends, making threats of what they would do to the kid that they chose. Kids also got made fun of there if they spoke another language or celebrated non-Christian religious holidays. Having all white staff, I’m sure, contributes to this problem as well. The teachers and staff did not keep our kid safe. He went to them on multiple occasions about being physically assaulted and they failed to take action or inform us. On the one day we were late to pick him up from school, we saw him entering an unknown car. We found out that a teacher was refusing to let him back inside on a below freezing day and that this concerned parent was taking him in to make sure he was safe and warm. Luckily, this parent had good intentions, but very easily that could have not been the case. When we addressed this with the principal, because he “knew the teacher well,” she faced no repercussions for the incident. Even on an academic level, we have no idea how the school has such high ratings. They did not at all challenge the kids and what my daughter started learning entering Kindergarten at our new school was what my son was just starting to learn at the end of 1st grade. Perhaps parents in this district just pay for tutoring outside of school to get their kids to a stronger academic place; we certainly had to offer the academic challenges at home as parents. Outside of just a lack of challenge, my child’s entire first grade curriculum was solely based, according to his teacher, on executive functioning skills. As a neurodivergent kid, this set my son up for failure, and is certainly not built as an inclusive academic structure for all learning types. No kid should ever have to go through what our son did. We hope this feedback prevents his experience from happening to someone else.

Carpenter is full of heart from the kids, to the staff and the parents. We couldn't be happier with the education our child is receiving.

Very good school in a great community. Our oldest has been there for three years and the teachers have created individualized learning strategies to maximize our child's learning. Having weekly primary challenge is a plus. Our youngest is enjoying the school and looks forward to going back every day to try and learn something new and to work on the basics.

A few months ago this was rated 10 out of 10. Some goofball parent gives it 1 star because it doesn't have a full day kindergarten? That's ridiculous. This is a 10 out of 10 school with great test scores, great teachers, high performing students with great parental involvement, and the average household income has to be in excess of $100,000 a year. This is a 10 out of 10 school and whoever rated it one out of 10 should be ashamed of themselves as they just lowered the property values for everyone in the neighborhood. Go move to Des Plaines or Niles if you want full day kindergarten.

Many of the teachers have had a very long career at this school and truly care about each of the students. There is a high population of special needs kids which really teaches all the kids to be understanding of everyone's differences. My oldest has been in the advanced programs such as Primary Challenge and the Channels of Challenge since 2nd grade to help move him forward in math since this is an area he excels in. When we were looking to upgrade our home - our objective was to stay in the district because of this school. Down side - there's been some turnover with the principals, and the building is a bit outdated and really needs a number of upgrades. Overall, it's a wonderful school tucked into the neighborhood with smaller class sizes than many of the other schools in the district.
