This school does not care about bullying. They have “favorites” and other kids are simply ignored if they aren’t “popular” or don’t have popular parents. The superintendent doesn’t care and only pays lip service to equality. The teachers and other administrators do nothing even when it is brought to their attention numerous times throughout the school year. If you can avoid sending your kids to the Ocean Beach school district absolutely DO!

Ocean Park School is a wonderful environment for children. The compassionate and dedicated staff consistently go above and beyond to meet the needs of the students. Located in a high poverty area, many students have specific needs academically and socially. The school supports these students, creating a web of trust and support to help them achieve their goals. Students are able to soar to their own heights in the schools individualized reading program. The OPSM program is great at helping students learn to become self managed. As a parent of a student at Ocean Park School, I feel thankful to have this gem in our community.

My daughter has been attending this school for two years and I am NOT impressed. They are more concerned about behavioral achievements than academic achievements. They have monthly assemblies to give awards for behavior (OPSM= ocean park self management ) but there's not assemblies to award honor roll?? The teachers seem to care about the students or at least most do (others not so much). The principal treats the kids like little soldiers and brushes you off when you have a concern. My daughter hasn't had ANY homework in the time she's been here which concerns me. I ask her everyday what she learned and 90% of the time I get "nothing?" She does workbooks at home that I buy and she is a grade ahead in those but the teachers and principle refuse to test her for advance placement classes. I have watched the bus drivers YELL at the children and the district ignores me when it's brought to their attention. This is NOT a school district that you want to bring your child into. Our family is considering moving across the country to be near the other half of the family and be in a higher rated school district!!! That's how AWFUL this school really is!!

This is a great little school! Students are encouraged to be active in community projects, such as collecting food for the local food bank, raising money for the AstroTurf soccer field, and putting together shoe boxes of joy for the elderly. Academics are getting more demanding with the Common Core State Standards, and Ocean Park gives as much individual attention as possible to struggling students. The parent group, FOOPS, raises about $7,000 per year which is used for field trips and other fun events. The teachers really care about kids, and look for ways to individualize instruction.

Ocean Park Elementary is a small school with a lot of services that you don't find in many elementary schools. We have a fantastic music and PE program--students go to these classes four days per week. Our soccer field was a community endeavor, and the students and community raised ten thousand dollars to put in an astro turf field. Schools these days are more rigorous than ever, and Ocean Park is no exception. Last year our staff began teaching Common Core State Standards, and we piloted the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Teachers are excited about developing thematic instruction units based upon student interests in real world instruction in science and social studies. The parent group, Friends of Ocean Park School is very active and provides the extra funds needed to go on interesting field trips and outdoor school. Mrs. Meinhardt is a wonderful principal, and we are working hard to meet all of the needs of our students and prepare students with the academic and technological skills they'll need for middle school and beyond. It's a friendly place, and we welcome volunteers and visitors!

I am afraid i have to agree with the below, It seems Classes are too large, and if a child is a little behind it seems like a hindrance to the teacher....There is not sense of individuality, no real sense of fun or enjoyable teaching experience. A School should be a place for children to Blossom into what they will become in life, this place just lacks a sense of Family....Meh

My nephew went to this school and the class sizes are overloaded and gigantic. When he was in 5th grade, he had a new teacher, "Mr. S", who worked so hard to keep that class under control. It was a class of 35 students and just one teacher. The following year was the same story when he was in 6th grade. "Mr. S" really made a difference for my nephew. He didn't get any of the credit he deserved for his individual work in shaping student character. He is at another school now and I just saw a large write up in the local paper about him. Sounds like he has taken his positive impact to a place where it is really appreciated. Ocean Park School is a rather negative environment and very staunch academic atmosphere. It doesn't seem like they are doing anything but shoving reading, writing, and math down the kids' throats in order to pass tests, but the fun in learning has been lost. I'm glad my nephew it at the middle school now. It's a better place for him. Also, Mr. Salisbury left the school and Mrs. Meinhardt is now principal. It seems like things got a lot less friendly with the regime change.

This is a small school but admin, teachers and staff are dedicated to their students. I am a volunteer working with 2nd and 3rd graders who are behind in reading and writing. Although I am legally blind I have found my niche in getting them up to speed and back into their regular classrooms through programs already in place and we as volunteers simply follow the programs and they work! Kudos to Ocean Park Elementary School, 101!
