Realms is an excellent school for kids who need additional help and have found that they need something different than public schools (or private schools like Rowland) to work for them. The kids are all unique in their own way, not just accepting of each other but genuinely encouraging differences. Realms does a great job of finding the kids' interests and motivating them to learn. They are good at allowing students to acquire and demonstrate knowledge using their strengths. They require unique and meaningful opportunities, including starting the school year with a week-long backpacking trip, fall intensive trips, an International study abroad trip (around 3 weeks), spring intensives, and another trip to end the school year. Lack of participation in these trips will result in expulsion. They offer mountain climbing and ski clubs (that go skiing every Friday during ski season). The kids complete projects that they are interested in each trimester. The school uses the PSAT/SAT to measure growth. As for cons, they are very resistant to parent participation, only accept parent chaperones on the trips if desperate, rarely respond to parent emails, will not allow SAT accommodations, and do not address reading remediation needs. Parents should expect to meet some of their children's educational needs outside of school if they have learning disabilities such as dyslexia. Parents should plan to request SAT accommodations directly from the College Board and arrange for testing outside of the school if accommodations are needed. Additionally, the trips frequently require physically demanding aspects that may not be suitable for all children but don't communicate that well before enrollment or the individual trip itself.

Realms is an exceptionally special school. My child is thriving at Realms. The school creates an environment where students can creatively pursue topics of interest to them, in very self-directed ways. It also does a tremendous job at helping students excel on academic fundamentals. My child finally loves Math. It provides highly experiential learning opportunities from world travel to local backpacking and community volunteering. From my perspective the school does an outstanding job to prepare these kids for the world they will graduate into. They need to be curious, resilient, adaptable and more.

Realms of Inquiry can be a life changing school for the right student. We moved across the country so our out-of-the-box daughter could attend a school that brought meaning and purpose to her life. We were not worried about “academics”, we were looking for a path that was about self-fulfillment and self-actualization. Teaching to the test and learning by rote memorization never spoke to our child. Learning how to self-advocate, design and research independent projects, travel internationally and head to the back county for hiking and climbing trips did. We have a very independent and self-sufficient kid, so the Realms model worked very well for her. At times I think she may have pushed them outside of their comfort zone, but they were always supportive. Our daughter was just accepted into all 10 colleges she applied to…so for the motivated student the sky was the limit at Realms, but she received a lot of support from home when going through the college application process. I don’t think Realms is about pushing kids at all, they are there to scaffold and support, so if you are looking for AP’s and testing you should probably look elsewhere. If you want to give your child the opportunity to do amazing things, see amazing places, and become the best person they can become, then Realms might just be the school for you.

Realms of Inquiry gives kids the ability to be intellectually curious, develop autonomy, grit, and rigor while providing a unique individualized learning opportunity. The hands on learning, immersion in other cultures and being surrounded by other creative, curious and intelligent learners have been the reason my kids have thrived at Realms. The difference a Realms education can make is immeasurable and I will be forever grateful that both my kids have been able to learn in such a supportive educational setting. Thank you Realms!

Be very careful when considering this school. They are only suitable for a very specific type of student. They are not as forthcoming with information on their expectations and the style of trips they take as they should be. After an extremely stressful first week of camping with total strangers, they decided our child couldn't succeed there and we were out thousands of dollars. They ask quite a lot of parents and students but do not communicate enough. If you're not ok with the idea of the school "dumping your child with a strange family in Nicaragua and asking him to walk six blocks the next day to find his teacher" this is not the place for you. This may be a great place for some students, but we do not want others to experience the financial and emotional damage this caused our family.

I have nothing but great things to say about Realms and its teachers. This school literally saved my son. He has finally found a place where he feels safe and is surrounded by intelligent, creative, and thoughtful students as well as teachers/mentors that he actually looks up to. The hands-on, experiential learning aspect has been one of his favorite parts, along with the small class size and relaxed atmosphere. If your child is failing to thrive, or even survive, in the traditional public/private school setting, please consider Realms.

Realms is an amazing place that is as attuned to individual students as I believe it is possible for an institution to be. In fact, Realms of Inquiry is an amazing amalgam of the apparent benefits of individualized home-schooling and the resources, community-building and high standards of an excellent school. The fact that it is student-centered does not mean it is an easy place to be a student. After 6 months my formerly school-hating child came to the realization that the very real responsibility that comes with the freedom Realms offers is way harder to handle than following the formulas for getting A's at his former (East Coast, private) school. The international trips and outdoor program are incalculably valuable to the kids' emotional, social and intellectual development. We are so grateful to have found this incredible school!

Realms is unique - a school that understands the differences that bright and gifted teens live with every day. Such children do not always fit the 'norm'. Realms gave our two children a chance to learn as they needed to learn - sometimes faster; sometimes wider; sometimes according to their own individual style - ways that allowed our independent students a chance to develop as they were made to develop. That is a beautiful and necessary thing for certain students. All we can say is "Thank you!" There is a lot of flexibility at Realms. If your child has an internal motor that drives them in a certain direction, then Realms will allow that motor to reach its goal. If your child sees the world differently because he or she is made for something particular, then Realms will engage that difference and allow it to blossom. Most of these children are the creative and brilliant individuals that society needs. It's worth valuing that so that everyone's future might benefit. Furthermore, Realms has a great outdoors curriculum that expands the students' capacities above and beyond, and causing them to mature into people who actively engage with the world. Realms is unique in Utah. It has a very strong focus on learning through experience. Gifted children work with their teachers towards a curriculum that allows them to learn at the rate that is right for them. It has a very small student to teacher ratio and a highly committed faculty. Consider Realms@
