This is a dedicated and intelligent school, staffed by teachers and professionals who are smart, caring, kind, and helpful. I am grateful that I'm able to send my child to this school, which he loves.

This is our first year and the school supports our child who is ahead of learning. His teacher adjusts the curriculum for him and challenges him to remain ahead instead of holding him back and get bored. We are very happy with this school.

Wonderful school in a wonderful neighborhood community. Families are committed and involved in building school and community. The PTO is great and does many great activities to build quality educational programs in the school. A very positive, high quality school for children and families.

Hiawatha/Howe Community school has provided my children a fantastic education - taught at their academic level. The staff and teachers are experienced, devoted, and caring. Parents are heavily involved in the school community. And this a small school with kids from the community - so everyone knows everyone. The "2" rating provide by this web page reflects a bias toward test scores which do not accurately represent the education the children are receiving. A visit to the school will reveal the real treasure this school is and the commitment everyone has toward educational success.

I love that from kindergarten they put the kids on a course to college. When I enrolled my kids in this school the first year they opened it was in part because they were going to teach my kids how to speak spanish. Instead the offer of a bilingual school brought in a majority of hispanic students and instead of teaching spanish it became an ESL school with no diversity. My kids are now in 5th grade and 6 years still can't speak but a few common words and phrases in spanish. What killed it for me was last month M.L.K birthday was not acknowledged and neither was black history month, But trust me they do it big for cinco de mayo. Overall the school has a great atmosphere and great teachers but I will not let my children miss out on learning everything they need to know about our history and culture. Sad and Disappointed Parent.

The teachers are great, the principal is wonderful. I think Hiawatha does an excellent job of fostering s school identity, and this is evident in the children's hard work and the parent involvement. It is important to remember that this test scoresn(and thus the Grest Schools rating) reflect progress against a fixed bar, not a class's progress over the year. Hiawatha has a moderate percentage of ESL students. Their challenges with the language bring the test scores down despite the fact that many of them have made huge academic steps. The scores do not accurately reflect the quality of Hiawatha.

Because it is a diverse inner city community school working very hard to educate children under tough conditions.
