My 3 oldest kids have all attended Delano and my 4th will be starting kindergarten there this year. I love the school. The principal is outstanding. When I moved to Memphis, I was worried if my kids could get a reasonable public school education. Delano has put my fears to rest. I am very pleased with the education my kids have received. We have had no safety concerns whatsoever. I agree with the parent who called Delano one of the unsung jewels of the city.

My daughter attended this school from K-5. When she came to the school in kindergarten she could read beginner books independently and count to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's which I taught her at home. What the school did was take her appetite for knowledge and enhance it with some of the social aspects that she had not been privy to as an only child. Each year her reading level soared past her previously outstanding pace and she had friends from which to learn and grow. The school is one of the unsung jewels of the city; commonly outperforming more notable schools on standardized tests. The teachers were experienced and had been at the school for generations of families as I found out along my daughter's journey through grade levels. The principal is completely accessible and engaged with her parents and scholars. The school is situated in an urban setting with some of the challenges that come along with that but I never worried about my daughter because the educators took such pride in ensuring that the kids were in a nurturing environment. Although I have completed my college degree and moved from the neighborhood I am confident that Delano Optional School is the right choice for my youngest child too. I will be enrolling her in the Fall '17 Kindergarten class.

If this is the only optional school you can get your child to attend it's okay. Be prepared for the neighborhood. The students are learning well at this community's rate. Most children here don't know their first and last name. Most teachers here to pay off student loans by teaching here for a few years. Sadly the children are suffering twice as much here. Most families are low educated and in poverty. The children are getting robbed of a decent education at home and at school. This school is always placed on lock down ( Due to shootings and gang violence in the area). The principal will not call and notify the parents you will find out on fox 13 news at 5:00 PM after work. Teach your children at home as much as possible because he/she will not gain knowledge here.

My son has attended this school for 2 years and has excelled like never before. Great teaching staff and Principal. They genuinely care about your child and want them to do well. They keep you posted on any new updates and continuously try and push and motivate the kids. Great, great school! Go Ms. Shipp!
