I have been so pleased with McKenna Elementary. This is my child’s second year, and she was a transfer from Mill Pond which was an awful school. The principal has been amazing, handled any concerns immediately, and my daughters teachers have been amazing. My daughter finally loves going to school and I couldn’t be more thankful to the staff at McKenna Elementary.

The principal seems Oblivious and doesn't listen to parent concerns about Bullying or Other issues.Plus the scrutinize the parents when they bring up any issues they might have with a teacher or a student or if there is a issue in general. The district leadership is weak due to the Good Old Boy network that is Yelm. Our children suffered because of this school and the acted like it wasn't there concern. I most definitely would not recommend this school for your student. If i could do lower then a 1 star I would!!!!

If a child gets injured, they do not call the parents to notify them. They also do not watch people who come in and out of the building.

My daughter attended the last 2months of 1st grade and 2nd grade. Since she was only there for the last 2months of 1st grade I didn't expect much from her teacher. However, I heard absolutely nothing from her teacher. We never even had a conference, which I thought was weird. 2nd grade she had Mrs. Buchmiller, who is amazing and helped my daughter get back to where she needed to be, she pushed my daughter and wouldn't give up on her. I felt like she truly cared how my daughter did in school, unlike her previous teachers. The school recommended putting my daughter in the special learning program to help her academically. After having my daughter in this program for a couple months and talking to other parents about it, she wont be returning to the program. I found it was a joke and was just wasting my daughter's learning time. I had multiple bullying instances during 2nd grade and when I would call the school to find out what they were going to do about it, they either told me to call the bus station because it pretty much wasn't there problem because it happened on the bus, or they would flat out ignore it. The bus station took it very serious and handled it very well. Depending on if my husband gets this new job, my daughter may be attending 3rd grade here and I will make 100% sure she is getting her education and not being bullied!

I THINK THE SCHOOL HAS WENT DOWN HILL. THE STAFF WANT TO CARE ABOUT THE STUDENTS, BUT WITH GRADING SYSTEM SO BAD. THE STAFF IS TO BUSY TRYING TO LEARN IT INSTEAD OF CARING FOR STUDENTS. AND THE NEW PRINCIPAL IS NOT EFFICIENT, IGNORES PROBLEMS. BULLING IS THE NEW THING

Very nice school, kept very clean, staff is always so friendly, and they have their students best interest at heart.

I love this principal! Mr. Piper is a huge improvement over the previous principal. He actually loves kids! The only area I see that needs to be improved is Special Education. Last year my child was making good progress and this year he has gotten coloring packets. His regular teachers have been excellent- all of them since we moved here.

Principal, Matt Piper, sets a tone in his school which calls all who enter McKenna Elementary school to dignify each other. When all is said and done, and the test scores are just that, the intention to show respect and kindness takes hold and spreads through the school to the community. Thank you, Mr. Piper

Mr. Piper is a great principal. Many excellent teachers and a beautiful building. We like the unicycle program, walk to read and music teacher
