Honestly, the school would be fantastic if the staff were better at their jobs. I was so excited to start this school because of all they claim to promote (Community, compassion, exploration, and individualism to name a few) The school has so much potential. I think they just need to sharpen up a bit and let a few incompetent staff members go.

When we enrolled out child into this school, we really hoped that it would offer a unique experience from what is seen in typical public schools. While the project-based learning is a great, and effective way for our child to learn, all other experiences have been terrible, as our concerns have been ignored, while our child is not making the progress we had hoped for. Staff at this school really need more training in how to teach differently abled children, and how their disability effects them in this environment.

LOVE this school for my daughter! She is in 6th grade and is excelling in math and her projects. Not a typical classroom environment, so great for kids who hate sitting in desks all day and do well in being responsible and motivated to learn. Tons of field trip options. Lots of exposure to unique and practical life/career options. This is a school that the more the child puts into it, the more they’ll get out of it. It’s not for everyone. Your child needs to be a self motivated learner. Great for someone that is on a PSEO path or career path. If your child needs structure, this might not be the right fit. If it doesn’t work out, I hear a lot of complaints from parents whose kids transfer back to traditional schools because without completing the year you won’t have transferable credits, so be confident your child is committed to this environment before going to JGESA. BUT, if you think project based learning will work for your kid, than this is an EXCELLENT school. I also appreciate the fact there is NO bullying at all at this school. It’s a small enough group that bullying could be easily identified and addressed, but I’ve not heard of it even occurring yet. The kids are very supportive to each other and engage in group projects and help each other with peer education. My daughter being in middle school age has high school friends that support and encourage her like mentors. Lots of clubs to join to get kids extra exposure to their interests like horses, yoga, meditation, photography, etc. there’s a pool, ropes course, and other unique athletic opportunities. They also encourage community and outreach by the students. One group of kids went to Feed My Starving Children together. Another built a carpet ball game as a project and then donated the game to Camp Courage. I can’t say enough good things about JEGSA. You can see more about the activities and projects on their Facebook page, so search it out and see if it is a good fit. Don’t be spooked by the test scores/reports at this point because the school is only in its 3rd year so there’s no enough data yet to accurately reflect its successes.
