I went to jefferson school from 1995-1997. It was a great school with memorable staff. I only had a problem with one teacher. This is where I found my love of reading and I loved the librarian, and the 2nd grade teachers. This school was cutting edge back then-(where I saw my first computers) and now (my daughter goes there and teaches ME how to do her homework on the iPads that distribute!). Great playground, great teachers, charming mid 20th century school. Wish they didn't have those unsightly portable classrooms now- those weren't always there. Students are active in the community and they have fun events, assemblies, fund raisers, movie nights, daddy daughter dances, and a great administration. I was proud to send my daughter there for her 1st and 2nd grade years.

The MAPS district has its in and outs, but mainly outs. There are your great teachers, which is really the only good thing. Today, there was a massive blizzard, and they didn't shut down. Visibility levels were so low, I stayed home, I'm a student. My parents felt disgusted with the Superintendent's decision not to close. Also, the parents have to come get the children. Also, they food at MMHS, has hair in EVERYTHING. My dog has less hair than I find in my food. The pizza, well everything, is a grease trap. Fold anything in half, wait 3 seconds, you will see grease dripping like a stream. How about that for a school?

This school is deteriorating in all manners. The character and quality of the staff is less than desirable. The value of the education is poor and so is the building. The classrooms are overcrowded. MAPS is creating a society of automatons. Some of what I have seen and heard are not what I want for my child. When researching available education choices for your child, please ask for honest opinions. There are many other options rather than subjecting your children to public school because "it's the only option." It is NOT! Many people in this community choose the private schools because of the quality of the education far surpasses what MAPS provides. Others prefer to send their kids to Onekama and some homeschool. Please invest your time and investigate for your unique needs. Your child is worth it!

2012 update on Jefferson in "my" opinion as a parent of 6 kids that has attended several different schools and school districts over the last 18 years, seems to lack many things that many other impressive school districts has had. I will say half of the staff in the school district are good at what they do.The other half either needs improvement or needs to GO! This is for teachers, superiors, clerical & transportation. There are a couple of staff that shouldn't be employed here, there's a couple that are just amazing! I will note that the special education staff,ISD/IEP staff are absolutely wonderful at what they do! Theres a couple of "teachers" that are also wonderful as well. Its a different community here verses other larger communities that we came from. The question I keep asking myself is "How is it that a large school district that has several schools, several programs, over 1,000 staff, well over 25,000 students, run in a city that has busing routes that run about 10 miles long & 10 miles wide, with at least 50 buses, run much better and more smoothly, that budgets well?" Every activity/event is so costly here,I assume thats to contribute to climbing out of some of their debts?

Jefferson Elementary makes everyone feel welcome. It is everyone's school and everyone takes pride in that.
