This school is a true gem. My child is in the TK class and it's amazing. His teacher is smart, kind and devoted to the kids. She has an advanced degree in early childhood education and it shows. The classroom size is small -- 15 kids. And the school itself is huge, built during the time when LA was putting money towards building new public schools. It's very pretty and there's tons of space to run around.

We've lived in this community for more than 20 years and have been fortunate enough to go to Van Ness Avenue Elementary.

We are 3 months in to my daughters kinder year, and it has been a joyous, exciting, positive experience. We were offered spots at 3 local charter schools in the area, but after seeing the direct, detrimental effects of these charters on the access and opportunities of students at Van Ness, we could not in good conscience not give Van Ness our full attention and involvement. “School Choice” has more to do with the challenges at this school than any teacher, principal, or policy. I encourage anyone within (and outside) the Van Ness boundary to come and check out the fantastic job Van Ness is doing in educating and caring for students, regardless of ability, color, or class. My daughter is happy, social, and enjoys learning and playing at Van Ness.

We've lived in larchmong for 10 years and our son started kindergarten this year at Van Ness elementary and it's been a wonderful experience. It's a small school with small class sizes which is so hard to find these days! His teacher is fantastic, as are all the others we've met! You know it's a great sign when your child tells you he's sad he has to leave school! Its been so much fun helping organize and participate in their new parent group P.AV.E with the support of some amazing parents and the new principle, as well as getting to know so many great neighborhood families along he way. Most of all I love that we get to walk him to and from school together. We feel so lucky to be a part of this incredible little neighborhood and that our local community school turned out to be such an undiscovered gem!

This school is on the path to becoming a very sought after elementary. Every year it gets better and better. More of the Larchmont locals are sending their children there because of that.

After trying without success to get our son into a charter or magnet school he started here in September and we could not be happier. The class size is relatively small compared to other schools, the principal and other staff know each and every child, everyone from the teachers to the cleaning staff really care about this school. The effort of the staff, teachers, and students shows in the latest test scores which went up again to 855. Our son is very happy here and with growing support from local parents Van Ness Ave. will only get better.

There is ongoing bullying at this school. Personally I don't think the administration is capable of creating a culture where bullying does not occur. I find the administration unctuous when what is needed is to create a culture of compassion. Look up Larchmont Charter, another public school that is nearby. At this moment they have 618 overwhelmingly positive reviews on greatschools.org. They also have a waiting list of 1,000. That should tell you all you need to know.
