This school is one of the best elementary schools in this area and their teaching is phenomenal me and my kids have been happy since I first checked them in.

Yes, it is a 1 out of 10 star school but it's turning around! A new principal took over in 2021-2022 and she has made great strides in improving the school environment and education. She can only do so much though. The larger problem is the parents of this community. They don't care enough to nurture their children's education at home so when they're in class the teachers have to teach at remedial levels to cater to children falling behind due to poor English or just general educational neglect at home. The children who should be in advanced studies or GIFTed programs get held back by these other students for whom their parents don't make enough effort to help them. This school has the potential to be above 6-7 stars and the teachers and staff really, TRULY do care about the students. But again, there's only so much that can be done without the help of parents. Personally, the only reason I'm thinking of pulling my child out is because there aren't enough resources available to him to teach at a more advanced level that I think he can handle. I just want him to be challenged more. Otherwise, the kids are all very supportive and friendly towards him. He loves Hillcrest, his peers, & the staff.

One of the teachers allowed his aide to bring her son to class. I witnessed how she disciplined her child, and it was not appropriate for the classroom environment. Their interaction traumatized my child and I had to transfer him to another school to be in a more nurturing environment because he has special needs.

Good. The school is getting better. There are new programs like Rites of Passage for the 5th grade boys and girls. The school has a counselor, a restorative justice teacher, and a nurse who is at school 4 days a week.

The biggest problem at this school is the racial segregation from the community that gets reflected at this school. The majority of staff is African American leaving many Hispanic parents in able to communicate, understand, and be a part of. Several times Hispanic parents have been told to leave the school because their unwanted. It is unfortunate that at this day and age staff members tell parents to leave because their not accepted. Administrations isn't only aware but sweep it under the rug as if their superiority is to be more integrated and respected by the rest causing intimidation by school officials and the neighbourhood hang which holds strong influences since most of the African American parents there are mostly gang related. The worst thing for a parent is not to sent their children to a school where other piers influence them negatively but for parents and staff to influence racism.

Charters are not the answer. And neither are people who have never worked in a school. Charter scores on average the same as public and have to keep being bailed out by big corporations. Why can't these corporations bail out public education, a basic right of every citizen? The teachers of Hillcrest wrote a plan. And in proper English.

This school is a tragedy! LAUSD please charter it out! Please! Yes, there's a new principal there and although she may be a great person, she has no backbone and has already been caught up in the turmoil that's contributed to the school's sad state of affairs. I sincerely regret enrolling my child at this school - even for the year that she attended.
