The school has a new principal who seems to be trying to make changes that will improve teacher support and parent concerns. The next couple of years will tell how effective those changes are. The school is IB and dual immersion so they do not fall under the normal guidelines. There is a group of parents who fell there is a lack of communication however this could be from the principal being “new” and waiting to communicate due to due diligence and I am okay with that.

Principal Mr. Little is great, and so is the rest of the office staff. Each child has two teachers which is good and bad. My son has been in this school since preschool and now fluent in Spanish in the 3rd grade. There are some great teachers that are really enthusiastic and you can tell they love what they do such as Senora Johnson, Partridge and Adame, Sherrillo.

the students get detention for nothing, teachers and staffs being over sensitive and low fund plus a lot of bullying, your children will be depress before 18 and might have sucide thoughts

This school has a small group of great teachers. Unfortunately, they lack the support of the administration to help their students succeed. Many staff at MV protect the bullies, by not taking appropriate disciplinary action when they act out against their peers, they are coddled and excuses are made for they behavior when they lash out at their peers. They are still allowed to go on field trips and be part of safety patrol and other clubs. The parents are the same, if they belittle the staff and volunteers, they are given power over others and not confronted about their behavior. While their DI program is excellent and not offered at many schools, they do not offer many resources for students who test above grade level. Awards are given for participation and mediocrity, not as they are deserved. The traffic flow for pick up and drop off is horrendous. Parents park in the loading zones and no one asks them to move. Unfortunately, the failure comes from the top.

This is the school I had always wanted for my kids: dual language, strong academics, caring teachers and a strong leadership. I am so excited that my kids can stay at Mt. Vernon till 8th grade. It is amazing not only to see my kids speaking Spanish and reading hard content in both languages. Mt. Vernon ia a hidden diamond in Lemon Grove. Thank you to everyone that helps make the school as my kids say: "the best school in the Universe".

I have had a pleasant experience with this school because the staff have been very helpful and friendly. My son also enjoys going to school as well. They also have a dual Immersion program for my son that has been very beneficial for him.

I was very diasappointed in this school. It got so bad I had to pull my children out with a little more than a month of school to go. The Administration and the 1st grade English only teacher really need to think about the decisions they have made and the total lack of to support given to this class. The class is very out of control, certain students are downright violent and have many emotional problems that the teacher is not trained to handle. All I got was there is nothing we can do. My student was not up to the standared reading and writing for 1st Grade Standards. Although I placed them in extra outside tutoring the teacher still did not make any attempts to help out or give me any feedback about their progress. Matter of fact half the class cannot read or write. The Principal shrugs his shoulders and says protocol dictates when asked why the teacher is still in the classroom and clearly lacks in classroom management and teaching skliils. Very disturbing for any Parent and child to have to deal with. I worked closely with the school with these issues but it became painfully obvious that my children were harmed both physically and mentally due to this classroom's teacher.

Our daughter has attended Mt. Vernon since Kindergarten and she is in 4th grade now. They have an Excellent dual language immersion program that challenges the children to learn English and Spanish at the same time. Our other daughter is in K dual language class and although it tires her out, we never thought she would be doing so well in two languages at such a young age. The teachers care about the students and there are a lot of PTA and dinner fundraisers so the kids don't have to sell things during the year. Overall we are truly happy and blessed to have found such a great school for our kids. Even with funding cuts, they have worked with what they're given and have creative events that the children enjoy that promote respect and humanitarianism. They have Bingo for books, field trips, plays, and have a morning Mustang Mileage Club for the kids to participate before class. They support Box Tops for Education and have carnivals and recognition assemblies for the children to promote peace building. I can't express enough how fortunate we are to have found this school.

I attended Mount Vernon Elementary as a third grader in the early nineties. My teacher, Elaine Baldwin, was the absolute best teacher I ever had. At Mount Vernon, all forms of creativity were encouraged. I'll never forget it.
