Students spend 80% of their day on iPads..(without content filters). Not an exaggeration, it's "school policy". Leadership at the school is poor, its almost like they found the most inexperienced person they could find and named her principle.

Kindergarten and 1st grade was wonderful! We really thought the school was great at that time. However, we started to encounter problems at 2nd grade. All of a sudden, technology took over and the only way to see our child's work was through an app. There was never any homework and we never really saw exactly how our child was progressing. 3rd grade came along and it got even worse. We found out that all the students had their own iPads in the class and were on them about 80% of the time. It's no wonder our children seem to be behind. The school also has a lack of filters on them since children have accidentally accessed inappropriate material. The principal seems to be more concerned over tardiness then the actual learning of the children. Drop off is a nightmare and they love to inconvenience any parent that might arrive just in the nick of time for school. Not friendly and they don't care. Test scores are terrible and we are pulling our children out of this school as it seems to be getting worse each year.

We have been at Sonoma for a little over a year. There is a mixed bag of devoted teachers and you take gamble each year on who your child will have. My son had a horrible 2nd grade year and did not get the services he needed in the regular ed classroom and teacher was unwilling to give him the individual attention he needed, recommended he be retained. His 3rd grade teacher is fabulous and has given him everything he needs. The new principal is very nice and is much more structured when it comes to bullying. This is an improvement considering my other son was bullied for a whole year and the teacher asked for help and did not get it until the last few months of school. They have a wonderful Take Flight reading program for kids struggling and their Kinder teachers are great. Just talk to other parents and make sure your child does not lose a whole year of learning with a bad teacher.

My grandchildren go to Sonoma Elementary. The staff is very involved and the security at the school is tremendous. I don't have to worry that someone will take any of my grandchildren or other children out the doors. My only concern is for the children who are not up to speed with the rest of the class and the only feedback I get is they will need to be held back. All children are different and learn at different speeds. Their needs need to be met in some way. The school counselor has been a great help and is very knowledgeable and caring. She would get my staff person of the year award if there is one.

We moved here from a highly rated school district. After seeing how many elementary schools were rated in Las Cruces, we were concerned. However, we started at Sonoma during my son's kinder year, and it has been a great school. We realize that ratings only tell part of the story. The school has a great staff and a fantastic prinicpal. My son has done well and has been challenged. We are amazed at how much the teachers do for these kids on a regular basis. A school is only as good as the amount of time the parents dedicate to following through on assignments and making sure the kids are on the right path. Anyone who thinks you send them to school and that's it will not see much success.

because my grandson loves to go to his school every day and the lessons are rich and the social environment is diverse and the school offers extras in all areas and communication between parents and teachers is fantastic

Sonoma is a great school. We love it and its great and supportive staff and principal. Parents are not as involved but considering how new it is, the PTO is doing a great job druming up interest.
