I moved my two kids to this school because the ratings were great. After a not so good experience at another school my oldest child fell behind. We came in thinking it would take months for her to get where she needed to be. But, after entering De Zavala she was able to “catch up” in only a few weeks! Her reading improved incredibly! Her math knowledge grew and her overall confidence was boosted! My youngest who is in pre-k knows his numbers to 30, he knows his ABC’s and most of the letter sounds. It is October he’s learned this so quickly! I am truly amazed at their progress here. A few things I dislike is there is no after school programs. There used to be a YMCA but it is no longer offered. My work schedule varies and unfortunately getting to them by 2:50-3pm is a struggle for us. The school is also very small, when they did their holiday program we were all crammed in the cafeteria it was really uncomfortable. They’ve also attempted to do other events in the basketball courts, and it’s usually hot still crowded and short staffed. Wish they had more parking! Overall the great educational knowledge my kids have gained overshadows the negatives.

This school is not the way it use to be a few years back. I have a total of 4 children and all of my old three attended this school. Now my youngest has just completed kinder and is having trouble because his first language is English and not Spanish! They now have a transition dual Spanish program. I don't understand why they didn't leave it be and keep bilingual classes separate!! Wish I could transfer my child but I can't cause he's zoned to that school. Just ridiculous!!!!!!!

Mr. Due as is the current principal and though this review is not about the principal I must say this principle does an amazing job of investing time and energy into his school and students. He is actively involved in all of the sports events and activities and is actively out recruiting new sponsors for his school. I was very impressed with his involvement and his determination to better the school and bring more resources for the students. This school offers extracurricular activities such as cheer, soccer, softball computer tech, reading clubs and so much more. The do not offer curb side pick up so if your child does not ride a bus get ready to park, walk and interact with parents and teachers daily to get to your child to pick up. They welcome parents to be involved unlike our old school and so far my girls love it here. If you are searching for a great school with awesome teachers, a great principal and happy students then this is a great choice for the east side of Houston. Hope this review helps another Mom searching for a better school in the area for their child.

I substitute teach for the district. I'm in about 60 schools per year-this one is one of the gems-orderly, well behaved children, helpful staff
