Rude staff and administration. Not sure how much experience anyone employed here has with Autism or behavioral therapies.....

I rate my experience with AH very high. They have a heart for students with Autism. They have an abundance of resources for patents and public school officials. AH understands their staff also have a family of their own, and is supportive when they need to take care of family matters. I recommend Avondale House to families who have a member with Autism.

Avondale is a very well run school with a caring teaching staff and professional school administration. I had trouble finding an appropriate place for my child and feel very lucky to have found Avondale House. He is thriving. We feel so fortunate.

Avondale House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency that provides, primarily, educational services to individuals with autism. To that end, we operate a year-round day school where we serve over 70 students from more than 12 different school districts, ranging in age from 3 to 21 years old. We also have a smaller day habilitation program for young adults, where clients receive training in daily living skills and pre-vocational activities. The agency also operates three residential group homes in southwest Houston for our clients who are unable to live in their own homes.Avondale is both a private school accredited by the Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools and a nonpublic school for students with disabilities approved for contracting purposes by the Texas Education Agency. With certified teachers, licensed specialists, well-trained paraprofessionals, a low teacher-to-student ratio, and small, state-of-the-art classroom settings, Avondale’s educational programs are tailored to meet the specific individual needs of each of our students. Our students, who are moderate to severe on the autism spectrum, frequently come to us with challenging behaviors that have prevented them from flourishing in other private or public schools. As such, we spend much time developing specific behavior intervention plans to support our students in our school and in their home settings. Our teaching staff receives extensive instruction for working with children and young adults with autism. They are trained in ABA methodology, TEKS standards, non-violent physical crisis intervention techniques (through Crisis Prevention Institute), emergency first aid, CPR/AED usage, and medication management. Avondale also has an on-site RN who oversees the medical care and medication usage of our students. We are also a teaching facility for the community. We collaborate with Texas Children’s Hospital Meyer Center for pediatric residents, serve as an internship facility for students from UH-Clear Lake’s behavior analysis program, host students volunteer from UTMB-Galveston’s occupational therapy program, and provide training on “best practices” for special ed teachers from nearby independent school districts. Our teaching, behavior support and administrative teams work together daily to meet the needs of our students and their families. We hope you will schedule a visit soon.

Avondale House has a beautiful well kept campus. However some of the staff are extremely unprofessional and rude. While on a tour of the campus I observed a young girl screaming, and yelling frantically and a staff member pulling her across the room. There were staff members wandering in the halls on their cell phones complaining about how they hate their job. While passing the library I observed the behavior support specialist slandering and gossiping about the principal, teachers and staff while in earshot of the students. I understand that working with individuals with special needs is challenging however there is a more professional way to deal with stressful situations than slandering your co-workers.I also observed teachers and teaching assistants administering medication to students which in the hands of the wrong person can led to over-medicating the students. This school looks great on paper and has a beautiful campus however there needs to be more professional development training for the staff.
