My experience with this school is one I wasn’t expecting and it’s my first experience with my child being in school. It’s hard to tell if the staff cares more about how they look or if they actually care for my child. Regardless, I feel EXTREMELY judged by both the principal and my child’s teacher. I have rational reasons for this and multiple instances where comments were made to me judging my family or the way I handle my child. I am so uncomfortable anytime I’m at this school and often avoid interactions with the staff. It’s disheartening as I want my child to have a great experience with school.

The teachers at this school are great and the parents are nice, but, principal Hornberg alienates the parents and does not encourage a partnership with them. She does everything she can to dismiss parent concerns and make parents feel unwelcome at the school. I would give Heartland 5 stars if the school had better leadership.

Worst experience with a principal who really only cared about safety and how things “look.” Principle Hornburg put the needs of other students ahead of my special needs child. Her focus was on safety and she didn’t care that her methods we’re destroying my child’s self esteem. She believed the ends justify the means. . Well she got what she wanted we left.

We know that what makes a school great is the community that participates. Parents are very involved at Heartland. Some teachers pour their heart and soul into the education of their students. They love the kids as their own and have high academic and character expectations. While many teachers at Heartland meet the needs of the individual student, some of these educators could benefit from practice of the Danielson model of teaching. The use of formative assessments are, at best, weak. My biggest complaint is that some teachers don't give a grade based on the assessment of knowledge or skill gained from the lesson, but subtract a letter grade for no name on a paper. While important to take ownership and correct a poor mistake, subtracting a letter grade is hardly a fair assessment of what the student has learned about the taught curriculum.

Principle Law is student-centered and always visible. Parents move to the community for the districts reputation of good schools. Parents are very involved and both school and parents focus on a strong education and good character.
