My child attended Uplift for kindergarten in 2022. The curriculum included a week long lesson about the Ferguson Police shooting/death of Michael Brown. My 5 year old came home in a panic with tears. We reached out to her teacher to understand the lesson and explain that we would like to know when topics such as that are discussed. The teacher shared the week long lesson plan centered around the book Painting For Peace in Ferguson with prompts to ask the kindergarten class “why did people board up their homes and business?” The suggested answer was “in fear.” We communicated with the Dean asking if we could see past topics taught to have an overview of what our 5 year old had learned. After a lot of back and forth, we were told it was copyright material that couldn’t be shared. Since we asked to be notified, we were told ahead of time by the teacher that the Afghanistan war would be taught to the kindergarten class through the book “Ali’s Story.” In the book, the child escapes war, but has to leave his parents behind bc they do not have proper documents.Our 5 year old later came home with details of a school shooting and details of Athena Strand’s death. These were discussed as a class. I understand classmates can bring up topics, but felt bc of the gravity of other lessons taught, there was 0 filtering based on the age and maturity of the children.As parents, we are focused on raising children that stand up when they experience or witness racism. Children that are aware of the evils of the world. We did not however agree that the material was age appropriate, as told in a very large class without theparent’s knowledge. When asked if she had a good day at school, my 5 year old replied a few times “It was a good day because no one shot at us.” Heartbreaking.Besides this, overall communication to parents was very limited, sloppy preparation for events (all families lined up outside in the heat for meet the teacher in the summer with school supplies in hand and the doors opened 10 mins past start time, parents getting released from an event and lead by cones to a gate that is closed at the street and every car turning around…..)At the time, I didn’t write a review bc I felt this was the norm for education today. Having higher standards now from experiencing a better school environment and am now even more appalled by Uplift and write this review to make others aware.

This school is horrible. Students do not lewrn anything, they are expected to wake up early as possible and get little to no sleep with the amount of work given. The highschool is stressful and the IB program is NOTHING like college. They’re painting themselves as good when they’re just draining students who already dint get enough sleep and have jobs and are overworked

Culture of Bullies, no appropriate repercussions for violence and no minimal/no support from leadership.

Too much fighting between students, they teach your child to be bullied and not stand up for their selves, my children are 504, and have not been tested but given huge amounts of homework, my child was being talked about and hit on constantly and now that he's standing up for his self the have a problem with that, my 11 yr old son was jumped on by 2 boys and was recorded by another student and I was not contacted about this, the dean does not comply with the parents when there is a issue. THET MAKE EXCUSES AND EXPECT THE PARENT TO TAKE IT IN. IM ONE PARENT THAT'S OVERLY CONCERNED ABOUT MY 3 CHILDREN BEING IN THIS SCHOOL. Kids are suppose to be safe and feel safe and yet my children constantly complains about the wrong things that goes on inside the classes and playgrounds.
