I have 3 children who graduated from this school. They went on to high school where they found that they were better prepared to know how to learn, listen, focus and follow directions than a lot of the kids who had gone through the public school. They all had a bit of a culture shock going into the public school with the bullying, bad language, and student disrespect that wasn't tolerated at the charter school. The two that graduated from high school with honors discovered that a very high percentage of the kids they had gone to school with at the academy also graduated with honors.I work in special services with children in the public school and have been impressed with the level of classroom support that the children are taught to give those with disabilities. This school does their best to teach to the high rather than the low. The high expectations have pros and cons for children with disabilities. They do not have a special classroom for disabled learners but as a past employee I can say they do have a good resource room team. The main con I see is a lack of certified occupational and physical therapy services for those children who need it. I don't know about speech therapy.

We do not mind the strict environment, but found that the school targets kids. If your child gets lower scores or is on an IEP the school goes out of its way to make your child miserable. Mr. Lovestead, the principal, wants his school to have the best scores. He is very open about saying if your child is not getting at least a B average then maybe you should change schools. They have one of the worst special education departments in Idaho. They will not follow an IEP and retaliate against your child if you complain. IEP children are disciplined harshly. My child had no behavior problems, but was always being chewed out or disciplined for low grades. This was done in spite of diagnosed disabilities and an IEP. They put on a good front, but do a lousy job behind closed doors.

My kids have loved going to the Academy, now Connor Academy. There are a lot of rules to adjust to initially but the environment is a great one! My kids feel safe and look forward to school. The teachers are amazing! I am grateful to have this school as an option, my kids have done so much better after leaving school district 25.

If you have a choice of this school or the Pocatello Community Charter school, I would recommend you look into BOTH schools before you make your choice. The Academy is more of an academic, rule oriented learning environment, while the PCCS is a hands on learning school. Both are good for different kinds of children. However, in my opinion, the Academy is too strict and promotes little tattle tales in their students. Furthermore, if your child is not keeping up with their class, he/she is placed in detention for small infractions, such as "not writing fast enough" or "drinking from the wrong drinking fountain." I cannot recommend this school.
