Pros: friendly and small school community, nice family events throughout the year, committed teachers, great parent community Cons: declining quality in past 5-10 years, admin (one) generally resistant to parent feedbackThere's a very inconsistent student experience from teacher to teacher. My kids experienced multiple teachers at the school. No longer a strong vision for taking the school to the next level. Unfortunately not all admins treat parents with respect or as partners in education. There are also some fairly inequitable fundraising practices. Kind people at the school, but learning quality has declined in recent years. Parents don't receive much support when approaching admin with problems (at least one admin is fairly arrogant). At one time, the school ensured solid teaching for all learners. No longer the case.

My son went to this school. It is very small but has a big community. They did various activities for the students, such as movie nights, bike days, or book fairs. During sixth grade in math, they become introduced to algebra and geometry by working with their peers and creating teamwork. The teachers here are very helpful when it comes to learning and they care about the students passing. If they see someone having a hard time working alone, they may leave to work in a small group in another room or hallway. However, I was worried about my son because he got bullied many times in the fourth and fifth grade during recess and I wonder why the staff or teacher never noticed that he was feeling down in class. He became very socially anxious during his school years because he felt left out and had trouble opening up at Mitchell. They don't care enough about these bullying issues. That is the main reason why I would downvote teachers and the administration. Overall this school is average and I would not rate it as the best of the best.

We have attended this schools for five years so far. The school has a extreme race issue, being that every black individual they come across come from poverty or what some have said " south side individuals". Teacher will only interact with some parent through email or not at all, to safe face amongst peers. We spend a extreme amount of time outside of the school to make up for what the school lacks. The school does not have a functioning library nor art programs.

Like at every school, there were ups and downs but, overall I love it. We treat each other like a family here.

Although my children are only in their first year at Mitchell I have found it to be an exceptional school.

This school has the best leadership and the most involved parents I've seen in the city of Chicago. The student body is diverse and the extracurricular activities are plenty. It is truly a diamond in the rough.

My son went to this school for 4th and 5th grade. It was a nightmare! I was constantly getting complaints about his behavior. Every other day it was something about what he had done wrong or how he was bullying the other kids. I finally moved my son to the suburbs and I'm not shocked that I never get a single complaint. I actually get compliments on how well behaved he is and how great of a student he is. He went from being a C/D student to an A/B student. The principal and vice principal at Mitchell are terrible. I tried to talk to them so many times about how there had to be something else going on at the school but they didn't care. I'm so happy my son is not in that environment anymore. Obviously he was the one being bullied and when he retaliated he was punished for it. Something needs to change at that school and I hope no other children are going through what my son went through.

I am not sure how the schools are rated, and I am saddened that Mitchell Elementary school -the small school with a BIG heart has a rating of 4! This school deserves a 100! As a grandparent, I am pleased that my two grandchildren feel happy, welcome and safe here. As a retired CPS teacher, I have an insight to the workings that make this school GREAT, that an average person might not see. Devoted Teachers and their training shows in the beautiful and busy learning environment. The school days come and go seemingly effortlessly as many activities occur, sometimes three in a school day - outside of and independent of the classrooms! Due to the quality and participation of parents (interested parents are quality parents), throughout the school year, Mitchell can bask in the love that develops within a tight community. Parents ARE PIVOTAL to the raising of funds for the extras that every school needs - be it field trip monies or sponsoring Hubbard Street Dance classes at school, instruments for music classes, art and other classroom supplies, or after school movie nights, or sock hops, or end of year fun fairs. Working together. We make me stronger! Go Bobcats!

Mitchell Elementary School is an awesome neighborhood school and a true diamond in the rough of public schools! I am proud that everyone who comes to Mitchell comments on how wonderfully the entire school community works together and how the students genuinely love coming to school. Many teachers are National Board Certified in a wide range of topics spanning Literacy to Physical Education. We are pleased to offer Mandarin Chinese as a World Language and students receive dance instruction from the renowned Hubbard Street Dance Company. I wanted to write this review because not only do I work at Mitchell School, I am a community member, and this school deserves top ratings! I find one of the true tests of a school is when the teachers send their own kids to school there--which many teachers already do, and someday I will as well! Mitchell definitely has one of the hardest working, professional team of teachers and likewise on our parent board, Friends of Mitchell . If you live in the West Town/Ukrainian Village area, or anywhere near this school, I urge you to check out our Small School with Big Dreams! There's always room for more amazing kids to join our Bobcat Family!

Mitchell School is a great school! Good teachers, staff, principal and students. My daughter has been in this school since pre-k and every year she's so excited to go back to school! The teachers make students feel welcome and secure. The ONLY reason I rated 4 stars is because I just found out that students don't graduate with cap and gown. Call me old school but my personal opinion is cap and gown should be a MUST! That's what every student looks forward to. Walking the stage with it on. Being able to distinguish who's graduating. Other than that, very awesome school.

We are so happy to have found Mitchell. I have two kids attending the school and have found the curriculum to be challenging, the teachers and staff to be supportive and creative, and the parent community engaged. Over 70% of the teachers are Nationally Board Certified. The teachers consistently win awards and grants for their classrooms. It is a small school, no child gets lost in the shuffle. The teachers (even in the older grades,) staff and administration know who all the students are and who their parents are. All students attend PE, Hubbard Street Dance, Chinese, art and music class weekly, including the PreK students. My kids love school and their teachers, I couldn't ask for anything else.

It's been said by people that have met Bruce Springsteen that he is exactly the kind of person you hoped he would be. As a parent that was apprehensive about sending my child to a Chicago Public School, I can wholeheartedly say that Mitchell Elementary is everything that I hoped it would be: wholeheartedly supported by the community it serves, dedicated 1000% to every child that attends there, and a place where enthusiasm for learning doesn't fall victim to the demands of test scores and standardized mandates. Our son has thrived in an atmosphere that reminds of the elementary school of my own childhood, which I looked forward to attending each day and whose teachers I remember fondly even now. The talented and dedicated staff both challenge and encourage my child to succeed academically as well as nuturing his sense of self-worth and respect and caring for others. Mitchell truly is a remarkable school that I feel fortunate to have discovered.

My school is the best in the city (if not the country). We are moving to 100% national board certified teachers, we have Mandarin Chinese, as well as a partnership with Hubbard Street Dance. My daughter thrives here, and we love it. Parents are very involved, which helps shape the school. The teachers/principal/asst principal will do anything to make sure your child is happy. With a small school, they know the kids and the families. Such a blessing!

The school is small by design which makes it an amazing little community. The teachers and staff are incredibly talented. Parents and community members are active in the school. It is an absolute treasure.

Small School, Big Dreams! Mitchell School has an individualized plan for each student which encourages them to live up to their highest potential. They focus on teaching kids how to be good citizens in addition to getting a good education. We have well rounded children thanks to Mitchell.

Mitchell is a real gem of a school in the city of Chicago. My child has adored every one of his teachers and is learning by leaps and bounds. I highly recommend this school.
